At Forth Ports, we’re offering a motivated individual the chance to kick-start their career with our Marine apprenticeship. Over two years, you'll gain hands on experience in port operations, including vessel mooring, lock gate operation, safety patrols, waste management, stakeholder engagement, emergency drills, and general maintenance to ensure a safe and efficient maritime environment, develop valuable skills, and work towards a Port Operative Apprentice qualification, in addition to commercial marine courses —all while earning as you learn.
We will hold our assessment day for this role on 30th April 2025 at the Port of Tilbury, where you will have the chance to meet some of the team and to find out more about the role and the apprenticeship. We will be in touch before then to let you know if you have been selected to attend.

About The Role
What you will learn:
In this apprenticeship, you will gain hands-on experience in various essential port operations. You will learn how to assist with the safe mooring and unmooring of vessels both at the lock and around the dock. Regular port patrols will help you develop an understanding of safety and security regulations, ensuring compliance within the port. You will also contribute to waste management by collecting categorised waste from vessels and cleaning the lock area using a specialist boat. Additionally, you will operate lock gates to facilitate smooth and efficient vessel transit.
Engaging with stakeholders, including port users and contractors, will enhance your communication and customer service skills. Participating in emergency drills will help you develop crucial emergency response skills, while general maintenance tasks will ensure a clean and safe working environment.
Through these responsibilities, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of port operations and develop valuable skills for a maritime career.

What are we looking for?
* GCSE in Maths & English at Grade C/4 or Functional Skill in Level 2 is essential
* GCSE in any science subject would be desirable
* Individuals who are able to demonstrate a genuine interest in the work that we do at the port, and are looking to build valuable skills for your future career
* Happy to travel to other ports and also whilst on block release for qualification
* Candidates will need to pass an ENG 1 or an ML5 seafarer medical fitness certificate to work at sea
* Full UK working rights
* UK driving licence is required
