Here at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, we are proud to provide expert, compassionate care for our local population. We are ranked as the third in the country for research, embedding education and training across the organisation. Our main hub is the Queen Alexandra Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals on the south coast employing over 8,700 staff.
Our patients come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds because it makes our hospital stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for getting it right for patients, colleagues, and our community, you will find a home at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.
Cardiology consists of a 50 bedded purpose built cardiology unit with 3 cardiac catheterisation laboratories, a 12 bedded CCU, 5 echo rooms, a 14-bedded day ward, a TOE and stress-echo room, as well as a dedicated cardiology out-patient suite including rooms for device follow-up, ambulatory monitoring and specialist nurses.
The general aspects of the appointment provide the opportunity to work in close contact with 19 consultants, each with complementary experience and interests that cover all aspects of clinical cardiology. Additional responsibilities are divided between ward cover, outpatient clinics and chest pain clinics. Training in cardiac catheterisation, pacing, echo, PCI and electrophysiology will be tailored according to individual experience and training requirements.
The weekly timetable will be tailored according to the experience and educational needs of the individual. The successful applicant will have passed the MRCP PACES examination. Experience in cardiology at registrar level will be an advantage but not a pre-requisite. Previous experience in cath lab skills or echo is not expected.
The out of hours responsibility is 1:10 for acute cardiology with cross cover for general medical ward problems in respiratory and gastroenterology, working alongside a medical SpR and a MOPRS SpR. Out of hours work is supported by a team of advanced clinical nurse practitioners as well as junior doctors.
Trainees from the renal training scheme are frequently seconded by their deanery to the team and AMU trainees have taken out of programme experience to take up this post. The post is particularly well suited to a candidate wishing to improve their clinical skills in cardiology as well as their experience in audit, research, service development, echo and cath lab skills prior to taking up a national training number in cardiology. Previous holders of this fixed term training post have frequently been successful in this regard.
There may be an opportunity for a trainee with appropriate experience to take up one of our specific training fellowships.

* Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
* MRCP
* BsC, MD or PhD
