Job Description
Venesky-Brown’s client, a public sector organisation in Redditch and Bromsgrove, is currently looking to recruit an HGV Mechanic for a 6 month contract on a rate of £24 umbrella or £19.71 PAYE.
Responsibilities:
1. Inspect, repair and service the organisation’s wide range of vehicles, small plant and agricultural equipment.
2. Carry out MOT tests and retests on class 4, 5 and 7 vehicles.
3. Carry out taxi tests to the standards set by the organisation.
4. Navigate around Bromsgrove and Redditch districts to attend breakdowns and undertake necessary repairs or facilitate the vehicles recovery back to the depot. Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures is essential.
5. Be prepared to work a split shift arrangement if required to meet the needs of the service.
6. Work from either of our two workshops if required to meet the needs of the service.
7. Cover periods of leave and sickness within the workshop and work bank holidays when the front line operational staff are working.
8. Provide cover during periods of emergency works, winter maintenance and special events as required.
9. Work flexibly to cover the needs of the service, working 37 hours per week, between 6:30am – 6pm Mon – Fri.
10. Train staff to carry out minor repairs and basic maintenance of plant and machinery and monitor that the work is carried out to the necessary standards.
11. Investigate and deal with enquiries from customers.
12. Act on own initiative regarding workload and work prioritisation.
13. Liaise with contractors when required.
14. Drive vehicles up to 26 tonnes (LGV).
Essential Skills:
1. Relevant experience within a similar organisation repairing and maintaining light vehicles and large goods vehicles.
2. Experience of performing MIG welding; gas welding and electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic diagnosis, repair & maintenance.
3. Understand and be able to work to the organisation’s Standards.
4. Ability to plan and prioritise service workload.
5. A good knowledge of Health and Safety, Data Protection and Freedom of Information.
6. Current full driving licence.
7. LGV Category C.
8. City and Guilds qualification or equivalent, relative to vehicle, LGV & HGV repair and maintenance.
9. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
10. Ability to deliver excellent customer care and understand how this relates to quality services and delivery standards.
11. Prepared to work on dirty vehicles and/or plant such as cesspool tankers, refuse freighters, mowers, etc.
12. Reliable, a good timekeeper with evidence of a good attendance record.
13. Able to carry out manual duties in all weathers.
14. Flexible with a ‘can do’ attitude to support the demands and specific needs of the service at both authorities.
15. Self-motivated, demonstrating initiative and able to give instruction to colleagues.
16. Able to understand detailed verbal instructions and interpret written work instructions, drawings, and plans.
17. Able to work alone or as part of a team to achieve the aims and objectives of both authorities.
18. Fully aware of safe working practices and risk assessments associated with the area of their expertise.
19. Able to solve problems on own initiative with limited resources using a systems thinking approach.
20. Understand the importance of excellent Customer Service.
Desirable Skills:
1. Ministry of Transport approved vehicle testers certificate for classes 4, 5 and 7 vehicles.
2. CITB Plant Operators Certificates.
3. Hold a current CPC training card.
4. Knowledge of IT systems, including spreadsheets and databases.
5. Experience of performing repairs to small plant, mowers, cutters, drills, agricultural equipment, tractors and other such equipment.
6. Knowledge of the direct services undertaken by both Bromsgrove and Redditch Councils and the equipment used.
