Due to a rapidly expanding workload in our London, UK office, Knight Piésold has a requirement for an Engineering Geologist to join our young team.
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Engineering Geologist, with a focus on ground investigation planning and testing, soil laboratory testing, and geotechnical assessments for mining projects and Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs). The successful candidate will have 5+ years of experience and will be responsible for designing and specifying ground investigations, interpreting laboratory test results, and providing geotechnical insights that influence project design and construction.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Planning, Design, and Specification of Ground Investigations:
1. Develop and oversee ground investigation programs, ensuring appropriate investigation methods are selected based on project requirements.
2. Specify the scope, methodologies, and locations for boreholes, trial pits, geophysics, and in-situ testing such as SPT, CPT, and permeability tests.
3. Ensure ground investigation planning aligns with site conditions, geotechnical risks, and required design parameters.
4. Prepare tender documents and technical specifications for ground investigations, coordinating with contractors and laboratories.
5. Supervise site investigations, ensuring proper sampling techniques and data collection.
2. Laboratory Testing: Design, Specification, and Interpretation
1. Develop laboratory testing programs for soil, rock, and tailings materials, ensuring a clear link between testing requirements and engineering design needs.
2. Review and interpret soil and tailings laboratory data to assess material properties and geotechnical behaviour.
3. Prepare analysis reports, providing data-driven recommendations for geotechnical design and TSF stability.
3. Geotechnical Assessments and Design Contributions:
1. Use site investigation and laboratory testing data to characterise subsurface conditions and geotechnical risks.
2. Perform slope stability, seepage, and settlement analysis using appropriate geotechnical modelling software.
3. Collaborate with geotechnical engineers to develop foundation recommendations, embankment designs, and drainage solutions for TSFs and mining infrastructure.
4. Assess ground improvement techniques where necessary for challenging soil conditions.
4. Technical Reporting and Regulatory Compliance:
1. Prepare factual and interpretive geotechnical reports, summarising investigation findings and providing engineering recommendations.
2. Ensure compliance with international and local geotechnical, mining, and environmental regulations, such as GISTM (Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management), ICMM guidelines, and BS/ISO/ASTM standards for testing.
3. Document and present findings, providing geotechnical risk mitigation strategies.
5. Stakeholder Engagement and Project Coordination:
1. Work closely with environmental, geotechnical, and mining engineers to ensure integrated project execution.
2. Coordinate with contractors, drillers, and laboratory technicians to ensure investigations meet project specifications.
3. Provide technical support during permitting and regulatory processes related to site characterisation and materials management.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
2. 5+ years of experience in ground investigations, geotechnical testing, and analysis, particularly in mining and TSF-related projects.
3. Strong background in designing, specifying, and interpreting laboratory testing for soils.
4. Experience with ground investigation planning, drilling supervision, and in-situ testing techniques.
5. Excellent reporting skills, with the ability to translate test results into design recommendations.
6. Chartered status or working towards CGeol (Chartered Geologist), CEng (Chartered Engineer), or equivalent.
7. Understanding of tailings behaviour, liquefaction potential, and dam safety principles.
8. Familiarity with geological risks such as seismicity, groundwater interactions, and expansive soils.
9. Proficiency with geotechnical software such as SLIDE, Slope/W, Plaxis, FLAC, or Rocscience tools.
10. Familiarity with the mining industry.
11. Experience working in remote or international mining locations.
Additional Requirements:
1. Willingness to travel to field sites and mining operations in the UK and globally overseas as required.
2. Commitment to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) best practices.
Why Join Us?
1. Work on technically challenging geotechnical and mining projects.
2. Opportunities for professional growth, training, and development.
3. Collaborative work environment with leading geotechnical and mining professionals.
4. Competitive salary and benefits package.
Application Process:
This is an excellent opportunity to join a young and expanding specialist technical team, with generous remuneration and profit share structure. Candidates must have the right to work in the UK. Candidates must be fluent in English; a second language will be viewed favourably. To apply, please submit your CV and cover letter outlining your experience in ground investigations, laboratory testing, and geotechnical analysis to London@knightpiesold.com.
