Studio Assistant - Polymaker
Hexham Studio
Deadline: 31 December 2024 at 23:55
Antony Gormley's Hexham Studio is looking for a new assistant 'Polymaker' to join our team in Northumberland.
Polymakers are responsible for the fabrication of polystyrene patterns, which are then cast in iron at our foundry in Hexham to create a finished work of sculpture. Working with a range of equipment, including bandsaws, welders and various powered and hand tools, the successful candidate will interpret Rhino CAD files to produce and prepare these patterns for casting. This is a small, close-knit team and the role also involves a range of tasks around the studio to keep our operation running smoothly.
The ideal candidate will be a confident maker, who is interested in the challenges of artwork fabrication and feels at home in a workshop environment. Excellent practical aptitude, diligence and strong attention to detail are crucial for success in this role, as is the confidence to work autonomously and organise oneself. A positive, proactive attitude and a willingness to work to deadlines, to learn and to follow instruction are also essential.
Ideally candidates will have demonstrable professional experience in a making/workshop environment; however, recent graduates who can demonstrate relevant practical skills will also be considered. Experience working with welders and bandsaws would be advantageous, as would experience using Rhino, but these are not a prerequisite, as full training will be given on all tools and processes.
Hexham is a market town, situated in the Tyne Valley, approximately 20 miles west of Newcastle with strong road and rail links to the surrounding area. This is a part-time role, based in the studio for four days a week, and all candidates must be willing to commute to Hexham for work if they are not already based in the area.
The salary for this position, working four days a week, is £20,230 per annum.
