We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and committed Biomedical Scientist. As a BMS working on the night shift within the department you will be required to work Saturday, Sunday & Monday nights or Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and one additional night every four weeks. Hours are typically 8pm-8:30am, though this is negotiable. You will have a brief period of training and orientation based on the day shift (days and times are negotiable to enable this). BMS staff working on the night shift perform a variety of tasks including working in a state of the art CL3 laboratory, performing Real Time PCR assays, using the MALDI TOF and BD Phoenix systems for automated identification and susceptibility testing, working on the BD KIESTRA TLA system, operating Beckman Coulter and Copan instrumentation and analysers such as SediMax, AutionMax and EntericBio.
Main duties of the job
Responsibilities will include querying specimens for microbiological investigations and carrying out laboratory testing according to defined protocols, to discuss ambiguous test requests with senior scientists or clinicians and to answer enquiries from health care professionals at the hospital or in the community.
The laboratory promotes continuous training and education amongst staff on the night shift and the department is undertaking a number of projects to support and promote a continuous process of development and improvement. BMS staff, alongside others, are offered opportunities to partake in project work and undertake various training activities, which are intended to develop initiative and incentive throughout the department as a whole.

Upon completion of departmental competencies proficient Biomedical Scientists working on the night shift are rewarded with a salary of up to £50,000 in addition to out-of-hours enhancements (this would bring an overall salary to approx. £63,000 pending experience). HSL also complete annual performance related salary reviews and offer a competitive annual leave allowance.

Job responsibilities
Main Duties: To include, but not be restricted to, the following duties:
1. Participate in all areas of laboratory bench work, whilst adhering to standard operating procedures and participating in their regular review and update.
2. Multidisciplinary working within the HLIUPL
3. Molecular diagnostics and amplification technique analysis of pathogens including screening of Gram negative resistance profiles
4. Communicate patients results and answer enquiries from health care professionals providing information regarding appropriate investigations required and explanation of results, within departmental guidelines and professional code of conduct.
5. Interpret clinical information and use scientific knowledge to process specimens for appropriate tests, seeking advice from senior staff and clinicians when necessary.
6. Undertake specimen preparation and analysis for bacteria, fungi and parasites. This includes preparation of stained smears, use of the microscope, antibiotic sensitivity testing, also utilising molecular and semi and fully automated techniques and diagnostic kits.
7. Investigate environmental samples for multi drug resistant hospital acquired infections e.g. MRSA
8. Operate and maintain analytical equipment in the department.
9. Evaluate and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.
10. Interpret complex scientific data and enter test results on pathology computer system
11. Check reports for further action by the Microbiology Clinicians.
12. Authorise reports as delegated within departmental policy.
13. Replace stocks of consumables and reagents when required and inform the Section Leader if back-up stocks are low.
14. To assist when required in the preparation of documentation for UKAS (ISO) accreditation.
15. Able to solve complex problems within work area, but advise both clinicians and senior staff of any clinical and managerial issues.

Qualifications
Essential
* BSc /MSc or equivalent
* IBMS / ACB Portfolio / FRC Path
* Registration with HCPC
* Registered with the IBMS or ACB CPD scheme
Experience
Essential
* Theoretical and practical knowledge in all disciplines of pathology relevant to its multidisciplinary nature.
* Previous experience in a relevant laboratory, and proficiency in techniques appropriate to the discipline.
