Drug and Alcohol Worker (Children and Young Persons Outreach) Swansea Job Description Role Drug and Alcohol Worker (Children and Young Persons Outreach) Service Choices within Swansea Location: Swansea Barod Base 73/74 Mansel Street, Swansea Hours: 37 Salary: £25,750 Reports to: Children and Young Persons Service Team Leader Team Members Reporting to Job Holder: Volunteers and Peer Mentors Contract: SMAF. Permanent, in line with funding The Service Swansea Barod provides services to people who use drugs or alcohol, their families, and communities. This will include early intervention, education and awareness raising, engaging and assessing service users, needle exchange, brief interventions, outreach, training, case management, health promotion, harm reduction initiatives, recovery and aftercare services. Role Purpose The role of the Children and Young Person Outreach Worker will be based within the Choices team. The primary function of this role is to work alongside other agencies e.g. local authority youth service, youth justice, police, and health to offer drug and alcohol support services in the community. This will include education, ensuring young people are aware of the risks associated with substance use. We will also ensure that young people in our community have early access to structured support and interventions. Main Duties and Responsibilities To use outreach to engage proactively with children and young people and potential high risk groups to allow early identification of substance use and prompt interventions as appropriate Provide targeted outreach services to encourage engagement with children and young people. To promote the single point of access entry point to children, young people and professionals. To work with children and young people in a way that promotes the Trauma Recovery Model Inspire and enthuse children and young people to maintain positive lifestyle changes. Develop strong relationships with partnering agencies and other workers in order to enhance children and young people’s support mechanisms. Ensure appropriate safeguarding and data protection principles are adhered to in working practice. Deliver mobile needle exchange services where relevant with safeguarding protocols at the core of the delivery. Promote outreach campaigns. Deliver harm reduction initiatives including take home Naloxone and Nyxoid kits, training, and Dried Blood Spot testing where age appropriate. Use a range of evidence-based age-appropriate interventions and methods. Person Specification Ideally all these requirements must be met by the candidate on appointment. However, in certain circumstances a candidate may be appointed who does not meet a particular requirement. This is providing that the shortfall can be made good in a reasonable time, and the candidate brings other skills, knowledge or experience which are valuable to the role and the Organisation. Essential Desirable Qualifications and training Full, current driving licence and use of a vehicle which is insured for business use. Level 3 in Advice and Guidance (or equivalent). Degree in a Health and Social Care related topic (or equivalent). Training in any of the following areas: Safeguarding Boundaries Substance Awareness Harm Reduction Safer Injecting Psychosocial Interventions Role-related knowledge, experience and skills Time management skills. Literacy and numeracy skills. Excellent IT skills: competency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Canva and Internet Explorer. Ability to problem solve, work under own initiative and able to work under pressure. Ability to work flexibly as part of a collaborative team. Effective interpersonal and networking skills. Good communication and presentation skills. Ability to adapt to working with people irrespective of their role, background or experience. Commitment to Barod values and mission. Previous experience of working within the substance use sector or similar field. Understanding of substance use treatment pathways. Welsh language speaker. Understanding/knowledge of ACEs and their impact. Experience of a trauma-informed approach.
