At Luton Borough Council, we're looking for a Senior Engineer – Traffic to take a lead role in improving transport safety and traffic management across our town. In this key position, you'll be the Council’s go-to specialist for traffic management and safety engineering. You'll support the Engineering Delivery Team Leader and help steer the future of Luton’s transport infrastructure by leading the development of our Integrated Transport capital programme. From identifying high-risk locations through detailed accident investigations to overseeing the design, safety auditing, and delivery of local traffic schemes, your expertise will directly impact the lives of thousands across the borough. What You'll Be Doing Leading traffic safety and management initiatives across Luton Designing and delivering local safety schemes with a focus on evidence-based improvements Managing the full cycle of traffic engineering projects—from concept to implementation Conducting safety audits and identifying accident hotspots for targeted action Supporting the wider Engineering Delivery Team with expert guidance and leadership About You You’ll bring substantial experience in traffic management, traffic engineering, road safety, and/or safety auditing, with the confidence to take initiative and work independently when needed. Your background will reflect strong project management capabilities, with a proven track record of delivering complex schemes from start to finish. Excellent communication skills are essential for this role. You’ll be comfortable handling enquiries and complaints from the public with sensitivity and professionalism, while also being able to consult, advise, and negotiate effectively with both internal colleagues and external stakeholders. Whether it’s presenting to diverse audiences or compiling detailed written reports, you'll have the ability to clearly explain complex technical information in a way that’s accessible and engaging. You should be confident using a range of digital tools including word processing, databases, and spreadsheets, and ideally have experience with specialist traffic and road safety applications to produce reports and graphical data. A strong understanding of relevant legislation, national guidelines, and best practice in traffic management, accident reduction, and road safety is key, along with a working knowledge of the Road Safety Audit process. A relevant qualification in highway or civil engineering—such as a degree or HNC (or equivalent)—will underpin your technical expertise.
