JOB DESCRIPTION
The Musical Director will be responsible for:
* Planning and leading weekly rehearsals.
* Conducting the company, musicians, and soloists at concerts, in shows, and at other community events.
* Working with and advising the committee on the choice of show and the selection of music for concerts and other events.
* Working with the committee and advising them on engaging musicians for shows and concerts.
The Musical Director may attend the company's committee meeting when invited by the committee.
Additional Responsibilities:
* To ensure that safeguarding is always considered when planning shows and company activity.
* To support equality, diversity, and inclusion across all aspects of the company's activities.
Person Specification:
The Musical Director should have the knowledge and experience and be able to demonstrate the following behaviours and skills:
* Knowledge of both traditional and modern musical show repertoire which can also be selected and used separately for concerts.
* Experience of directing Musical Theatre Companies.
* Experience of leading adult companies.
* Experience of choosing musical shows and selecting pieces for concerts and other events to encourage audiences and future company members.
* An engaging, enthusiastic, and dynamic style that encourages and supports the development of amateur singers and offers opportunities within the company and externally.
* Formal conductor training.
* Proven ability to build relationships with the company's committee and company members.
The Musical Director will be appointed on a self-employed basis with remuneration discussed at interview and subject to yearly review. The successful candidate will not be employed but will be engaged as an independent contractor providing services to the company. They will be responsible for their own income tax liabilities and National Insurance contributions.

West Kirby Musical Theatre Company is looking for a permanent Musical Director following the recent retirement of Rob Bowness.
We are looking for a Director with a track record of experience in conducting, leading, and shaping concerts and shows and to maintain West Kirby Musical Theatre Company's dynamic reputation for singing and performance. The successful individual will have energy, vision, and the creativity to lead us to the next phase of West Kirby Musical Theatre Companies musical journey.
The Musical Director will be responsible for planning and leading weekly rehearsals, conducting the company and musicians during show weeks. They will also work collaboratively with the Committee regarding the selection of music for concerts and other events.
Monday rehearsals last 2.5 hours. When we have shows or concerts coming up, we rehearse Wednesdays and Sundays. So hours per week range from 2.5 to 10 hours. We pay £280 per month.
Job Responsibilities
We have many concerts planned throughout 2025 and are excited to report that we are performing Shrek at the Gladstone Theatre in June 2026. We would need a new Musical Director in place by November 2025 at the latest, to fulfil this commitment.
The Company rehearses in Greasby Methodist Church Hall Monday evenings 7.30-10pm and, running up to shows and concerts, on Wednesdays and some Sundays closer to performance dates.
We are very fortunate to have experienced accompanists who have worked with us for a number of years.
The selection process will be via interview and a rehearsal audition. We feel it is essential that any prospective Musical Director meets the Committee and Company to ensure there is mutual compatibility.
The contract will be subject to an agreed probationary period. The starting date will be beginning of October 2025.
