SPEN are currently recruiting a Design Lead within our Cable Engineering team is responsible for leading and managing a team of professional design engineers developing and delivering engineering solutions, from feasibility to detailed engineering designs for all cable projects (33kV and above).
This will include providing the necessary basic and detailed engineering specifications and designs for projects, innovation, effective technical support, advice, and input throughout the lifecycle of the project.
This position has up to 5 direct reports.
What you'll be doing
* Advising on the development of pre-contract design and delivery of projects by leading/supporting the technical aspects of cable systems.
* Assessing engineering documentation, feasibility and compliance with client requirements and support the preparation of accurate budgets for new projects.
* Advising on construction and outage programmes where required in relation to cable engineering.
* Overseeing and undertaking basic and detailed engineering specifications and designs for cable systems.
* Providing technical assessment of tender submissions and reporting recommendations.
* Defining cable system requirements for input to System Construction Authorisation (SCA), Project Technical Specifications and BETTA documentation.
* Co-ordinating the Preparation/Review of cable engineering drawings and specifications for construction/procurement.
* Controlling correspondence and drawings to be issued to the Project Development and Delivery Teams.
* Ensuring all designs and equipment are in accordance with current legislation, policies, and operational requirements.
* Delegating the technical resolution of site/ construction issues.
* Leading the technical tender assessment of cable systems incl. ancillaries (including suppliers).
* Providing technical support to the Project Development and Project Delivery teams on matters concerning the design, construction and operation of cables and associated equipment.
* Leading training needs assessment for new products or similar and the development and delivery of technical, operational and safety packages for such products.
* Supporting the Cable Engineering Section Head in the development of standards or other regulatory matters related to cable engineering.
* Attending meetings and deputising for the Section Head as required.
What you'll bring
We are looking for an individual with good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships with other individuals, departments, and businesses.
They will have knowledge of Transmission Operator Networks health & safety, technical and compliance requirements and a broad understanding of Electrical Network Owners/Operators and the market these businesses operate in.
As a Design Lead, proven experience and expert knowledge in cable system design at 33kV to 400kV voltage level and of CDM Regulations and Designer Risk Assessment is advantageous.
Minimum Criteria:
* Engineering Degree or equivalent experience.
* People management experience.
* Experience in delivering engineering designs and solutions for high value and complex transmission cable projects.
* Proven abilities of communicating with and influencing managers and key stakeholders and writing clear and concise documents covering technical, environmental and commercial subjects.
* Working knowledge and experience of CYMCAP software or similar ampacity software.
* Full UK driving licence.
