Applications are invited for the above full time post for this 660-bedded acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. The appointment will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of service for the 2003 consultant contract
The appointee will be encouraged and supported in developing their own specialty interests such as orthognathic surgery, skin surgery, sialendoscopy and to a developing tempo-mandibular joint replacement service within the overall job plan.
Luton Hospital is the hub for an OMFS network covering Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes & North & East Herts. This post is based at Luton Hospital with designated sessions at Lister. Though rare, there may on occasion be a requirement to work on other sites within the Network.
Weekly work commitments will be within EWTD guidance & also be influenced by the British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial recommendations, the Consultant contract & will be specified in the Job Plan.
The appointee will participate in a 1:8 on call commitment based at Luton & Dunstable Hospital.
The Clinical Director will encourage the member to be part of the New Consultant Forum of the British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial surgeons & will also help to choose a mentor within the Trust but outside the department.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will join a friendly team of 8 Consultant OMF Surgeons within the Beds, Herts & Bucks OMFS network, providing services for Luton & Dunstable Hospital, Bedford Hospital, Lister Hospital, QEII Hospital & Milton Keynes Hospital.
The post-holder will be competent in assessing & carrying out the full range of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. All in-patient services & on-call duties have been centralised to Luton Hospital. Out-patient clinics, day case surgery & local anaesthetic minor oral surgery are undertaken in all of the units.
The OMFS department at Lister Hospital has a well-equipped Maxillofacial Laboratory staffed by three technicians & its own in house digital imaging facility.
OMFS has day surgery lists in both the Treatment Centre & the newly built Day Surgery unit. The clinical team is fully supported by a team of highly trained dental nurses & maxillofacial/orthodontic technologists.
We are fully committed to teaching and training both undergraduate medical students and post graduate doctors and have an excellent reputation for junior staff training.
Both hospitals have easy access to central London & the rural Chilterns. Excellent schools are found nearby. London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes’ drive from Luton and Dunstable Hospital.
Travel between hospital sites may be required. Residence is required within ten miles by road of the hospital.

Personnel Circumstances
Essential criteria
1. Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on-call emergencies.
2. Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance
3. Satisfactory DBS clearance
Registration
Essential criteria
4. Full and Specialist GMC Registration with a licence to practice
5. Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register: CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview)
6. A registable qualification with the UK GDC or eligibility to enter it within 6 months at the time of interview
Training
Essential criteria
7. Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within six months of award of CCT or equivalent (CESR) by date of interview
Desirable criteria
8. Completion of a Head and Neck Cancer Fellowship or equivalent.
Qualification

9. MBBS or evidence of equivalent qualification

Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
13. Evidence of thorough, broad training and experience in OMFS
14. Comprehensive knowledge of OMFS and ability to offer expert clinical opinions on range of OMFS conditions
15. Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering OMFS service including trauma, without direct supervision.
16. Experience in OMFS Head & Neck Surgery with micro-vascular reconstruction
17. Experience in Surgical Dermatology.

18. Record of regular attendance at national specialty meetings in OMFS.
19. Evidence of sub-specialty training or fellowship out of region
