Lead Data Scientist Location: Remote Salary: £46,000 - £51,000We are recruiting on behalf of a leading UK charity committed to supporting vulnerable individuals. As part of an ambitious new data and analytics strategy, the charity is transforming into a truly data-driven organisation, using insights to inform and improve its services. Central to this strategy is the newly established Data and Analytics Hub, which includes an emerging data science function. We are now seeking a Lead Data Scientist to play a pivotal role in shaping and growing this function. About the Role As the Lead Data Scientist, you will be a key member of the Data and Analytics Hub leadership team. You will be responsible for identifying, developing, and deploying data science models that drive strategic decision-making and enhance the impact of the charity's services. You will collaborate closely with senior stakeholders across the organisation to ensure solutions align with business needs.This role requires both hands-on data science expertise and the ability to lead and develop a small but growing team of data scientists. Key Responsibilities: Strategy & Leadership : Shape and expand the data science function, exploring opportunities for collaboration with external partners and pro bono support. Data Science Delivery : Lead the development and deployment of data science projects that drive meaningful insights and operational efficiencies. Stakeholder Engagement : Work closely with senior leaders across the charity to identify data-driven opportunities that support its mission. Technical Development : Ensure best practices in machine learning, analytics, and AI are embedded within the team's processes. Team Management : Recruit, mentor, and develop a team of data scientists, fostering a culture of innovation and technical excellence. Collaboration with Data Engineering : Work alongside the Associate Head of Data Engineering to ensure the data analytics platform and tools meet the needs of data science projects. Current Priority Projects Include: Propensity Modelling : Developing and deploying supervised machine learning models to enhance engagement strategies. Natural Language Processing (NLP) & Large Language Models (LLMs) : Using unstructured data from support services to improve operational efficiency and generate insights into key concerns. About You We are looking for a proactive and strategic leader with a passion for using data science to drive social impact. Essential Skills & Experience: Significant experience in a data science role, with a strong track record of delivering impactful projects. Experience managing and mentoring data scientists. Strong strategic thinking, with the ability to develop and scale a data science function. Expertise in machine learning, predictive modelling, and NLP, with experience deploying models in real-world environments. Advanced programming skills in Python and/or R, alongside strong SQL proficiency. Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (ideally Azure) and version control systems such as Git. Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into plain English for non-technical audiences. This is a permanent opportunity, working for a well-known national Charity. Paying £46,000 - £51,000 per annum, 7% pension, Life Assurance, Discounts, Offers, 29 days holiday (increasing with service) etc. Remote workign with occasional travel.
