Locum Speciality Doctor - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Doctor)

A Speciality Doctor post is available to commence as soon as possible at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. The post holder will be expected to work a total of 10 PA’s a week which will include 8 sessions of direct clinical care (DCC) and 2 session supporting clinical activity (SPA).
The post can be a job share if suitable candidates available.
This post is based in Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust which comprises of 3 main sites; Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, Wycombe General Hospital in High Wycombe and Amersham General Hospital in Amersham. The post holder’s duties will be based across the Trust sites at Aylesbury, Amersham and Marlow.
Please note ALL applicants MUST hold a FULL GDC Licence to Practice in the UK for this role.

Candidates will share the responsibility of the day to day running of the unit, i.e. operating lists, waiting lists, clinics and supervision of junior staff. The majority of emergencies are seen and treated by the Staff Grades and the Associate Specialist with full consultant cover.
The Speciality Doctor duties involve:
1. Outpatient Clinics: The Speciality Doctor will assist the Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and Associate Specialists Oral Surgeons. The speciality doctor will be assessing patients with intraoral hard and soft tissue lesions, dental and dentoalveolar pathology, TMJ pathology, head and neck lumps, salivary gland pathology, skin lesions, oral and maxillofacial trauma, head and neck malignancies. The clinics for assessment of new patients, treatment and reviews are principally held at Stoke Mandeville and Amersham.
2. Operating Sessions: The Speciality Doctor will operate at the day case operating theatre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital with responsibility to the Consultants, mainly providing assistance and performing certain procedures under supervision. There will be outpatient operating sessions for biopsy and minor oral surgery procedures performed under supervision. There are 2 weekly clinics for surgical treatment using intravenous sedation and local analgesia in the department and the Speciality Doctor may be expected to participate in this.
3. Emergency Patients: The Speciality Doctor will be required to assess or treat emergency patients referred by the Accident & Emergency Department and any emergencies referred by the medical or dental practitioners during working hours. The department does not provide an emergency service for general dentistry or out of hours oral & maxillofacial surgery service.
4. Other Duties of the Post: There are regular audit meetings, for which normal commitments are cancelled, in order that all relevant staff, including the Speciality Doctor, may attend. These audit sessions take place on a monthly basis.
5. Clinical Governance: The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness and risk management. He/she will take part in and occasionally lead on quality improvement activities as required by the Trust and external accrediting bodies.
6. Personal and Professional Development: The post-holder will be responsible for self-development of competencies and skills in their relevant area of practice. Open access to the Trust’s postgraduate education centre including a library and computing facilities is available to support this. The post-holder must be able to demonstrate their personal and professional development to the satisfaction of the Trust. Annual appraisal is a Trust requirement.
7. Accountability and responsibility: The post-holder will be accountable to the SDU Leads.
8. Teaching / Audit / Research: The post-holder will be expected to make a contribution to the Specialty Registrar academic teaching programme and to contribute to the monthly departmental audit meeting. He/she will be encouraged to participate in and potentially lead local, regional and national audits.
9. On-call commitment: The post does not carry an on-call commitment.
