About the programme
Maintaining the Royal Navy's ships and submarines is essential to safeguarding our nation and its interests. On our Electrical and Electronic Design Engineering programme, you’ll discover how the Facilities Engineering Design team plays a pivotal role in the upkeep of these vital assets in the largest naval base in Western Europe.
Throughout this programme you’ll gain valuable insights into the electrical infrastructure that supports the continuous operations of the dockyard and naval accommodation base. Along the way, you’ll develop a deep understanding of the electrical principles essential for designing, commissioning, and maintaining advanced electrical systems.
Electrical and Electronic Design Engineering at Babcock
You’ll join an experienced team specialising in Electrical Control and Instrumentation Systems, HV/LV Electrical Power Distribution Networks, and Electrical Building Services. Working alongside seasoned engineers, you’ll play a crucial role in providing technical support for the operation and maintenance of existing electrical infrastructure, while also contributing to the design and modification of new systems. This programme offers comprehensive development in both technical and design engineering, giving you practical experience with advanced CAD tools and industry-leading electrical design software, including ETAP, Amtech, Dialux/Relux, and more.
What you'll need
1. An electrical & electronic engineering degree is desirable but not essential. We also accept a wide range of degrees in the following disciplines: Power Systems, Control & Instrumentation, Systems Engineering, Signal processing, Computer Systems, IT and Communications Systems. Our preference is that your degree is also accredited by a relevant institution (IET, IMechE etc.).
2. Many of our early careers roles are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which roles you are eligible for. For our early careers roles, you must be able to achieve BPSS and many of them require you to be eligible for Security Clearance.

Where you'll be based
Places on our Electrical and Electronic Design Engineering programme for Autumn 2025 are available in Plymouth. Our business in Plymouth works in partnership with the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and Royal Navy at HM Naval Base Devonport. We provide through-life support for submarines, surface ships and associated systems and equipment as part of our continuing commitment to support our nation’s naval capability.
Your home base will be Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth. However, some of your placements may be at other sites.
