Job overview
The consultant post provides medical leadership to the multidisciplinary clinical team working on the ward and provides clinical expertise in the assessment and treatment of inpatients admitted to the adult psychiatric unit.
The consultant will be responsible for up to 12-13 patients in the 19-bed female unit, working alongside a non-medical AC/RC who will lead on the care and treatment of up to 6-7 patients. The role involves close collaboration with the nursing team, ward manager, and other professionals to provide medical assessment, diagnosis, and formulation.
Main duties of the job
* Provide medical assessment, diagnosis, and formulation to patients admitted under the post holder’s care.
* Assess and make recommendations under the Mental Health Act.
* Act as Responsible Clinician for patients detained under the Mental Health Act.
* Provide urgent assessments including S136 and liaison assessments.
* Ensure up-to-date, evidence-based interventions for patients admitted under the post holder’s care.
* Collaborate with GPs, Community Treatment Team, and primary care clinicians regarding the physical health care of patients.
* Provide leadership, consultation, advice, and guidance within the adult acute pathway.
* Work collaboratively with Senior Clinical Colleagues in the Inpatient Care team.
* Contribute to ongoing training and development within the team.
* Train and supervise junior medical staff, medical students, and other allied professions.
* Lead and advise on research and audit projects within the clinical governance agenda.
* Complete necessary administrative tasks for the clinical role.
Minimum Requirements
* Registration with the GMC (or eligible to become registered) with a licence to practice.
* MRCPsych or equivalent.
* Included on GMC Specialist Register (General Psychiatry) or eligible for inclusion.
* Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.
* Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field.
* Training in educational supervision and appraisal.
Knowledge
* Up-to-date knowledge in the field of old age psychiatry.
* Awareness of current issues in mental health policy and legislation.
Experience
* Experience of multi-disciplinary team working.
* Wide clinical experience in old age psychiatry.
* Experience in service management or development.
Skills
* High level of clinical skills.
* Proven competence in diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders.
* Excellent teaching skills.
