Job summary
University Hospitals Dorset is currently seeking a motivated and enthusiastic person to join our team of Clinical Coders. Our Clinical Coding Department has recently been restructured to meet the increasing demands of the NHS and to support the Trust's business activity.
Senior Clinical Coders are part of a team responsible for the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of the Trust's computer based Clinical Coding systems in line with National Standards.
You will:
1. Extract, analyse and code information from the patient's electronic medical record into a coded format using OPCS and ICD-10 formats.
2. Communicate complex coding examples to relevant members of staff.
3. Exercise judgement in the interpretation of information to ensure accuracy.
4. Organise own work loads and work within deadlines.
5. Continual personal development.
This role will be offered as a Band 4.
Base Location: The Coding Department offers a flexible working approach, offering both office and home based working.

Main duties of the job
1. Senior Clinical Coders have demonstrable experience within a clinical coding department and intend to study for the accreditation.
2. To extract, analyse and code information from patient records, locating and collating missing case notes and information as necessary.
3. To deal with enquiries and liaise with clinicians.
4. Act as a mentor to less experienced clinical coding staff.
5. They may also assist in the production of ad hoc reports on patient-based activity.

Qualifications
Essential
1. Good basic education.
2. Successful completion of Clinical Coding Standards Course.
3. Knowledge of all specialty coding.
Desirable
1. Successful completion of Clinical Coding Standards Refresher Course.
Experience
Essential
1. 2 years of clinical coding experience within an Acute Trust or equivalent experience.
Skills
Essential
1. IT Literate.
2. Working knowledge of relevant software package - hospital clinical systems.
Knowledge
Essential
1. Knowledge of National Clinical Coding Standards.
2. Knowledge of NHS Digital Toolkit.
3. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology acquired through training or work.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of PbR pathways.
2. Understanding of HRG allocations and its uses.
