Ward 16 is the Elective Orthopaedic Ward, catering for patients who undergo joint replacement surgery. You will be working with a motivated, friendly team who deliver high quality care.
This is an entry-level post which will provide you with invaluable experience to enable you to develop your career in the NHS. There are opportunities to develop additional skills such as venepuncture, and for those who have ambitions for a career in nursing, this role is a good starting point to develop the basic skills of care.
Main duties of the job
Your role as a Health Care Assistant is to work alongside a Registered Nurse as part of the Ward to provide care to patients.
1. Washing and dressing patients.
2. Serving patients meals, assisting with feeding when necessary.
3. Helping people to mobilise.
4. Assisting patients with toileting.
5. Bed-making and generally assisting with patients' overall comfort.
6. Monitoring patients' conditions by taking temperatures, pulse, respirations, and weight.
Acting with compassion, you will put patients at the centre of all you do. You will communicate effectively with patients and their carers.
This role will require you to work variable hours on a rota, including nights and weekends.
You will show courage by embracing new ways of working and doing the right thing by the people you care for, including speaking up when you have concerns.

Job Description
Job responsibilities
1. Assist with washing and dressing patients, using hoists as appropriate.
2. Assist with serving meals and feeding patients, including reporting on their intake and recording on charts as appropriate.
3. Assist with toileting, escorting patients to and from the lavatory and recording outputs where necessary.
4. Assist with monitoring patients' conditions by taking temperatures, pulse, respirations, and weight.
5. Assist with patients' mobilisation, ensuring a safe environment and using appropriate techniques.
6. Make beds and help to ensure the ward/department is kept clean, tidy, and safe.
7. Communicate with patients and their relatives with care and compassion.
8. Help to ensure that patients are kept comfortable and receive personalised care.
9. Be involved in patient booking in / admission, introducing patients to ward / department area as directed by registered nurse.
10. Assist with the recording and safe keeping of patients' property and valuables.
11. Assist the multi-professional team to prepare and support patients undergoing treatment and/or investigation, maintaining privacy and dignity at all times.
12. Safeguard vulnerable adults.
13. Report to the nurse in charge of the ward/department matters of concern relating to patients and the ward/department environment.
14. Undertake duties outside your working area (e.g., delivery and collection) to assist in maintaining good communication.
15. Ensure the privacy and dignity of patients is met at all times.
16. Be adaptable and flexible to working in various areas of the department or ward as required.

* Experience of working in a patient care setting or customer-facing environment.

* Ability to communicate effectively, and demonstrate excellent communication skills: verbal, listening & written.
* Legible handwriting.
* Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the concept of confidentiality.
