About the Opportunity
The Assurance, Technology and Regulation (AT&R) performance unit is a critical part of the Technology Consulting & Innovation business. AT&R has been providing critical services to the nuclear industry for over 60 years.
Do you want to play a vital role in existing and new defence and civil nuclear programmes in the UK, and want to provide key physics support to both defence and civil nuclear sectors?
We are looking for a full-time Specialist Physicist/Consultant to join our Reactor and Radiation Physics Team at Amentum Birchwood office in Cheshire. We are looking for a Specialist Physicist who is self-motivated and looking to develop future Physics based technology. In addition to support independent nuclear safety and technical assessment of nuclear submarine propulsion plant, and Physics analysis model development in support of the civil nuclear sector and other safety critical infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities include:
* Development of Advanced Monte Carlo Methods
* Nuclear Data Analysis and Processing
* Contributing to Research projects in Nuclear Physics Methods
o Maintenance of current capabilities to support operation of current nuclear technologies.
o Development of future methods to support design and operation of future novel nuclear technologies, and existing nuclear fleets
o Delivery of training and SQEP development in specialised nuclear physics methods.
* Applying your personal skills and experience to other projects being carried out by Amentum, clients in the civil nuclear industry.
* Assessment of safety cases.
* Assessment of design technical cases.
* Providing formal independent nuclear safety and technical assessment of documents relating to the Physics aspects of nuclear propulsion and delivering the assessment output in formal letters, which may be presented to relevant safety and technical committees.
* Performing assurance activities (Physics trails and testing).
* Provide Development and mentoring to less experienced team members based on personal experience and expertise.
* Representing Amentum at safety and technical meetings with clients, designers, and safety case authors.
* Providing support to Nuclear Propulsion Research and Technology
Here's What You'll Need
Relevant background experience should include some of the following:
* Physics methods and modelling development
* Development of physics analysis codes
* Criticality and radiation shielding assessment
* Reactor Plant Physics analysis and performance
* Independent nuclear safety assurance including safety assessment of relevant safety cases, and technical assessment of reactor designs
* Criticality safety analysis
* Radiation shielding
You will also have experience of some of the following:
* Criticality safety, reactor physics or shielding analysis
* Submarine reactor design and safety case
* Civil reactor design and safety case
* Shielding and radiological safety case development and assessment
* Understanding of the UK Regulatory and Assurance Environment
