The unit comprises 21 beds and has one additional trolley bay for medical assessments. Two thirds of the activity happen on the adjacent same day emergency care unit (RAMU). The standard operating procedures and the expectations around consultant-delivered care are the same as on the RSCH site, although the range of specialties on-site and able to provide in-reach is obviously less than that available on the main campus, but still includes respiratory medicine, diabetes and endocrinology, and frailty. Gastroenterology and cardiology consultants visit the hospital daily and patients requiring urgent care from these specialties can be transferred quickly to the Brighton campus when needed. The Royal Sussex County Hospital site in Brighton is a tertiary referral centre. There is a 36-bedded Acute Assessment Unit adjacent to ED, radiology, and the same day emergency care unit (EACU). Acute medicine services operate on this site in a conventional way. However, every effort is made to triage patients to provide acute medical care directly at our Princess Royal site rather than The Royal Sussex County Hospital.
