JOB SUMMARY: Landscape Crew Leaders play a crucial role in enhancing and maintaining green spaces through effective planning and coordination. They oversee projects involving the planting and care of various plants, flowers, and shrubs, aiming for beautification and environmental benefits like erosion control. In this role, Landscape Crew Leaders guide a work crew, ensuring that all work adheres to established criteria and practices. Employees in this job class are responsible for developing detailed plans, executing tasks, and troubleshooting any issues that arise during the project. Assignments come from multiple sources, including work orders and meetings, and successful completion is reviewed by a supervisor for quality and adherence to policies.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Agencies provide competitive pay and comprehensive benefits packages to include medical and dental insurance, employer-sponsored retirement plan (pension), generous paid holidays, sick and vacation leave, and more. The pay range for this job varies depending upon the Merit System employing agency: $21.48 - $33.32 USD Hourly.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be considered for employment in this position, a candidate must possess the following:
* Class B Commercial Driver’s license (CDL).
* Ornamental and Turf Pest Control Permit (Custodial or Supervisor).
* Experience in operating landscaping equipment and tools including but not limited to: tillers, mowers, hedge shears, chainsaws, edger, string trimmers, shovels, and rakes, skid steer loader, tractor, backhoe, etc.
* Experience in planting and cutting trees, shrubs, hedges, ground cover, and turf grass on the basis of a landscape design.
* Experience training new personnel on the proper use of landscaping equipment and tools.
JOB DUTIES:
Typical job duties include, but are not necessarily limited to:
* Maintains equipment and tools (e.g., mowers, bobcat, blower, weed eater, sprayers) by conducting pre-trip inspections and scheduling regular service maintenance in order to ensure that the equipment is working correctly and downtime is minimized.
* Oversees the application of pesticides and fertilizers to ensure that the materials are used in a safe manner, using various equipment, such as a spray truck or back pack, to maintain the health and growth of plants by eliminating unwanted weeds and pests.
* Directs and participates in the installation of plants and flower beds by prepping the area, removing debris, planting the appropriate material, and cleaning the area at completion to ensure that a high standard of quality is maintained.
* Acts as a lead worker of peer or support staff by assigning and reviewing work tasks, facilitating training, and providing feedback using policies, procedures, tools, and directives from management in order to ensure tasks are completed in accordance with established requirements.
* Manages the documentation of completed work by writing daily reports, completing a chemical application log, and maintaining the incident report log for accidents and behavioral incidents.
* Inspects all equipment after use for damage and unusual wear prior to being loaded back on the truck.
* Maintains herbicide and pesticide licenses by attending training in spraying of pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides yearly to gain credits.
* Identifies training needs of subordinates and offers coaching, mentoring, and developmental opportunities to increase staff skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of moderate activity such as digging holes, loading/unloading materials, or extended standing. May involve frequent lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed primarily in outdoor settings such as gardens, grounds, and parks year-round. Work involves the use of gardening/landscaping tools (e.g., pruning shears, shovels, rakes) as well as the use of various types of heavy equipment (e.g., bobcat, gator, backhoe).
