Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Poole, Dorset
We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant for a full-time position in a SEND school, located in Poole, Dorset. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of supporting children with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs as well as experience working with children diagnosed with ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). This position requires an immediate start, and the selected candidate will become an integral part of our committed special educational needs team.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide tailored support to students with SEMH, ASC, and ADHD within a classroom setting or on a one-to-one basis.
2. Collaborate with teachers and other staff members to implement individual education plans (IEPs) and behavior management plans.
3. Assist in the development of students' academic skills, emotional regulation, and social skills through targeted interventions.
4. Employ de-escalation techniques and promote a safe and supportive learning environment.
5. Facilitate effective communication between students, staff, and parents/carers.
6. Observe and record students' progress, reporting any concerns to the relevant parties.
7. Participate in training and professional development opportunities relevant to the role and the needs of the students.
8. Encourage student independence and self-advocacy within the school community.
9. Assist with the preparation of teaching materials and the adaptation of resources to meet individual learning needs.
Essential Requirements:
1. Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant or in SEMH support roles with children.
2. Strong understanding of the complexities associated with SEMH, ASC, and ADHD.
3. Ability to build rapport and effectively support children with varying needs.
4. Solid knowledge of safeguarding principles and child protection policies.
5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
6. Patience, resilience and a positive, solutions-focused approach to challenges.
7. A valid Enhanced DBS check or willingness to obtain one.
Desirable Qualifications:
1. Relevant professional qualifications or a degree in a related field such as Psychology, Education, or Social Work.
2. Additional certifications in SEMH, special needs education, or behavior management.
