UCLH, one of London's key cancer centres, is seeking to recruit a Clinical Trials Assistant on a 12-month fixed-term contract to support a growing number of cancer clinical trials. The successful candidate will be based within the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit (CCTU) at 250 Euston Road.
The main role of the clinical trials assistant is to support the CCTU team in the administration and running of the in-house, national, and international phase I, II, and III clinical trials. Responsibilities include contacting patients by phone, assisting the clinical trial practitioners and research nurses with the booking of patient appointments. Other tasks include creation and maintenance of files for clinical trials, handling of correspondence, and processing or handling of blood and tumour tissue samples.
You will be part of a supportive and dynamic team, working closely with clinical research staff. The role is vital in supporting clinical research staff deliver excellent care to patients with cancer. Full training will be provided, but the successful candidate will be expected to manage their own workload to achieve the goals set by the team.
Ideally, we want someone with an interest in clinical research and cancer, good verbal and written communication skills, and knowledge of Microsoft products such as Excel. This role would be ideal for a new science graduate looking to get their first experience of working in a healthcare setting.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is responsible for:
1. Sending, collecting, and storing questionnaires
2. Handling incoming mail and correspondence
3. Providing a high-quality personal assistant service to the team when needed
4. Attending clinics if/when requested by the Nurse/Coordinator
5. Retrieval/creation and maintenance of patient notes
6. Site File maintenance
7. Requesting and sending biological samples
8. Supporting data managers with relevant queries
9. Maintaining up to date and accurate filing systems - paper and IT
10. Assisting with surveys/audits as required
11. Having a high degree of interpersonal and communication skills to liaise with a wide range of personnel in the multidisciplinary team orally, in writing, or electronically in a professional and courteous manner
12. Taking minutes at departmental and tumour group meetings
13. Completing mandatory training and other recommended training
14. Prioritising workload, meeting deadlines, and tackling problems systematically and with initiative
15. Maintaining confidentiality of patient-related information at all times

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Cancer Services sits within the Surgery and Cancer Board. It incorporates comprehensive outpatient, day care, ambulatory care, and inpatient services for Oncology and Haematology.
The Cancer Clinical Trials Unit office is based in 250 Euston Rd and comprises of three main areas: Haematology, Oncology, and Complex Pathways, and it supports activity in the local Clinical Research Facility and the North Thames Local Comprehensive Research Network and Experimental Cancer Centre. Each group is comprised of teams of research nurses, clinical trial practitioners, and data managers and provides support to local Investigators wishing to conduct clinical trials and other high-quality clinical research projects within UCLH. Each team supports a portfolio of research and ensures that trials are conducted to the highest standards and in accordance with UK legislation and the R&D Governance Framework. The aim of the Unit is to effectively use resources to ensure that patients have access to entry into clinical trials, as appropriate, and maintain the highest quality of care for patients.
