Job Description Summary
The Cancer Registrar, under general supervision and according to established objectives and procedures, codes and abstracts cancer data, follows up with cancer patients, and performs long and short-term audits. Identifies, abstracts, and provides follow-up for patients with cancer. This includes reviewing and analyzing hospital records and other medical reports for cancer data. Data collection and determination include demographics, primary site, histology, stage, and treatment on all cancer primaries. Data will be coded and recorded according to the Commission on Cancer Standards for Oncology Registry Entry and the Massachusetts State Cancer Registry, as well as ICD-O, AJCC, SEER, and Solid Tumor Manual.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
1. Maintains Cancer Registry Files for Facility. Codes and abstracts cancer-related data as per procedures established by STORE (Commission on Cancer Standards for Oncology Registry Entry), the MCR (Massachusetts State Cancer Registry), and SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results). Summarizes patient’s hospital record for completion including demographic information, diagnostic information, histological information, staging, and therapy rendered into the abstracting system.
2. Reports all new cases to the Massachusetts Cancer Registry through the computerized registry system. In accordance with the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer (ACOS, COC) guidelines, maintains registry files and logs of all hospital cancer cases.
3. Conducts annual lifetime follow-up on patients in the Cancer Registry by reviewing the medical record or contacting the physician. Enters all follow-up information into the METRIQ Computer software.
4. Assists with the Hospital's Organization of Cancer Program activities.
5. Arranges and coordinates weekly Tumor Boards. Compiles reports on the incidence of cancer for internal agencies using the METRIQ database and performs studies as requested. Maintains a Request Log documenting studies.
6. Participates in research data collection as determined by the Cancer Committee and prepares statistical reports and analysis as requested. Provides data on cancer patient population and related statistics for hospital planning and administration as requested.
7. Remains abreast of developments in the field of Cancer Registry by pursuing a program of self-development. Participates in educational activities by the National Cancer Registrar’s Association and Cancer Registrars Association of New England.
8. Develops, implements, and revises policies and procedures of the Cancer Registry. Ensures policies and procedures are in compliance with the Massachusetts State Cancer Registry. Maintains the Policy and Procedure Log in the Cancer Registrar.
9. Participates in continued learning and possesses a willingness and ability to learn and utilize new technology and procedures that continue to develop in their role and throughout the organization. Embraces technological advances that allow effective and efficient communication of information based on role.
Experience/Skills/Abilities:
1. Level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of an Associate's Degree in Medical Record Technology or Nursing.
2. Certification.
3. A minimum of five years Cancer Registry experience preferred.
4. Certified Tumor Registrar Certification (CTR)/Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) or able to pass the CTR examination within 1 year of date of hire.
5. Ability to work independently, abstract all cancer sites, complete follow-up including recurrences and subsequent treatment and case finding, assist with Tumor Boards as necessary.
6. Knowledge of METRIQ software preferred.
