Service Unit Manager - Straight to Test and Faster Diagnostic

Key elements of role: Reporting to the Matron, the post holder will be responsible for the effective and efficient operational management of the department/unit; including budget control, clinical governance, staff development and training. It is expected that the post holder creates and maintains a positive learning environment in the department. They will be expected to provide professional leadership within the clinical area and provide direction, and inspirational leadership to all members of the multi-disciplinary team within the area for which they are accountable for. The post holder will be involved in the development of protocols/guidelines and patient information. They will champion quality, patient safety and experience acting as an advocate for patients.
Main duties of the job
Main duties of role involve management from a clinical, operational and staff aspect. The role will involve working with wider MDTs both clinical and non-clinical teams in supporting 28-day faster diagnostic and cancer pathways.
You will be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the specialty. To interpret information and take appropriate action and to lead others to do the same.
To apply clinical skills of the highest standard and to take a proactive approach to the development of clinical competence in self and others.
Maximise use of clinical resources, implementing best practice in patient flow, diagnostic tests prescription and discharge.
Job responsibilities
To monitor monthly budget statements, identifying trends, understanding spending patterns in order to stay in budget and to take action as required.
To comply with the Trust's standing financial instructions.
To ensure that the departments have adequate resources/equipment to provide an effective service.
To ensure the Matron is informed when changes to circumstances may affect safe competent practice.
Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication which may include transfusion of blood or controlled drugs.
Ensure all staff move and handle patients and goods in ways that promote the health of the patient and care team and are consistent with legislation.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Evidence of ongoing professional development in relevant area of specialty supplemented by specialist clinical, managerial training and CPD.
* RN1/ RN2/ RN12 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of specialty.
* Masters Degree.
* NVQ Assessors Course.
* To hold a range of management courses.
Experience
* Experience of managing an area; including management of rotas, resources, budgets and staff.
* Experience in staff/practice development including undertaking appraisals and Personal development plans.
* Experience of audit/research-based nursing practice.
* Experience of resource management.
* Experience of Clinical Supervision.
* Experience of conducting own projects successfully and following through action.
* Experience of analysing detailed information.
Skills
* Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues.
* Awareness of government led and professional issues relating to nursing/patient care.
* Ability to identify patient and staff issues and proactive in addressing these.
* Demonstrate an awareness of clinical governance and risk management and how this affects their role and the department.
* Ability to administer prescribed medication including blood products.
* Ability to use and understand Electronic Patient Records (EPR).
* Ability to actively participate in and develop initiatives from the NHS Plan.
* Ability to interpret and analyse complex data and findings.
