London Job Summary Today’s geopolitical climate is complex, volatile and unpredictable. With conflicts in Ukraine, Africa and the Middle East, rising tensions across Asia Pacific, and alliances being consolidated among NATO’s adversaries and competitors, the UK must continue to play a leading role in support of the values, freedoms and security of its many friends and allies around the world. Achieving this requires a powerful relationship between Government, the Armed Forces and industry, an imperative that is central to the National Armaments Director (NAD) role, the creation of which was a key Labour Party manifesto commitment. Following the Prime Minister’s announcement of the UK’s biggest sustained increase in defence spending since the Cold War, the new NAD will be tasked with widening the UK’s defence ecosystem and driving international collaboration. Their overriding objective will be to ensure that the UK’s manufacturing base can provide our Armed Forces with the capability, resources and capacity required to meet any future challenge. Responsibilities The NAD will lead the MOD alongside the Permanent Secretary, the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Defence Nuclear. The postholder will be responsible for delivering the capabilities needed to execute the defence plans and operations demanded by the new era. This includes: Shaping and delivering the defence industrial strategy, ensuring a resilient supply chain and delivering UK exports; Leading acquisition reform and harmonising procurement across domains and international partners to cut waste and duplication; Securing standardisation in NATO and across allies to achieve interoperability; Working closely with wider government, industry, academia and international partners to leverage best practice and investment. On a day-to-day basis the NAD will be accountable to the Defence Secretary. Whilst applications are welcome from a wide variety of sector backgrounds, the successful candidate will demonstrate: Very senior, strategic leadership experience gained within a large, complex organisation, with a track record of leading significant, demonstrably successful change; Deep understanding of relevant industry, operational efficiency and commercial constructs, with a strong network at the highest levels of industry and Government; Political sensitivity and understanding with a proven ability in managing complex relationships and building strong collaborative partnerships with global partners; Confident commercial, financial and operational abilities, with a track record of managing large budgets and driving innovation.
