Job Summary
This post will cover 6 clinical sessions per week. 3 sessions working alongside the Ophthalmology Emergency Consultant reviewing a variety of patients with ophthalmic conditions, this may include a telephone session. 2 sessions supporting the triage service, including supporting staff who have completed ophthalmology training to complete competencies in triage and streaming of patients. 1 general clinic session, to maintain ophthalmic competencies and support the wider clinic.
The post holder will be expected to act as an autonomous ophthalmic nurse practitioner to co-ordinate the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of appropriate programs of care for patients requiring ophthalmic emergency care. The post holder will be expected to act as a role model for nursing and non-nursing support staff and work with the multidisciplinary team ensuring that a high standard of holistic care is maintained for all patients and their families.

Skills
Essential
* A good understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathology and microbiology related to ophthalmology
* Demonstrate continuing professional development
* A good knowledge and understanding of ophthalmic triage and streaming of patients from Accident and emergency
* Be the lead in the triage of ophthalmic patients to ensure the patient is reviewed in a timely manner by the appropriate clinician
* Support triage staff
* Support patients with a range of visual abilities and needs, adapting care for all patient groups
* Work within all aspects of clinical governance
Desirable
* Good slit lamp skills and provide a wide range of ophthalmic skills to include lacrimal sac washout, Schirmer's, Removal of foreign body, eye irrigation, ability to recognise basic red eye conditions.
* Knowledge of current research and professional issues relating to the speciality
* Up to date with emergency eye service guidelines both locally and nationally

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training
* RGN Level 1
* Demonstrable or significant experience in ophthalmology
* NMC registrant
* A recognised ophthalmic qualification or be working towards an ophthalmic qualification

* Teaching and assessing qualification
