Job Description
About the job
Who we are:
Our mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to net zero carbon, but we need to move quickly. Emitwise wants to ensure that every organisation across the world, big or small, is able to embark on a sustainability journey that culminates in net zero. The planet deserves more than just another tech company, and if you do too, then keep reading.
At Emitwise, we've built a team that has the skillset and desire to bring automated carbon accounting to life — saving businesses time, money, and emissions. We have built a platform which makes it significantly easier and faster for companies to calculate, track, and reduce their carbon emissions. This allows them to reduce costs, future-proof their business, and become sustainability leaders. Ultimately, we're a group of people disenchanted with business as usual and looking to make a real impact through creative innovation.
We’re a well-funded post-Series-A startup backed by top-tier Silicon Valley investors who share our mission, including True Ventures, Outsized Ventures, Lightbird Capital, ArcTern, Social Impact Capital and Xplorer Capital. To develop industry-shifting products we work with pioneers like Marc Engel, Ex Chief Supply Chain Officer of Unilever, Lynelle Cameron, ex Chief Sustainability Officer of Autodesk and Rob Bernard, Chief Sustainability Officer of CBRE.

Your mission:
We are looking for a Lead Full Stack Software Engineer to help us deliver new versions of our Reportwise and Procurewise products. To be a good fit for this particular role, we need you to have had significant experience in frontend development, with a good understanding of best practices in UX implementation and a deep knowledge of React. However, we are a small team with a lot of ground to cover, so we’d also like you to be happy working at different levels in the stack. At Emitwise, this might involve writing performant backend web services, implementing data pipelines, and setting up infrastructure in the cloud, as well as creating a responsive, beautiful UX.
The impact you'll have:
* Enabling companies to rapidly progress towards net-zero
* Allowing companies to calculate their emissions for the first time
* Developing detailed and accurate emissions of the products they produce
* Engaging their supply chain to do the same
The work you'll do:
* Leading a squad of 3-5 engineers, both setting the technical direction of the squad and helping plan and manage squad members’ day-to-day work
* Hands on development work - you won’t be spending all your time coding, but we’d expect you to contribute significantly to design, implementation, and testing work alongside the rest of your squad
* Helping determine our frontend architecture, processes, and tooling, and acting as a source of wisdom and guidance on frontend development across the engineering team
* Contributing to shaping the future of the engineering team as a whole, acting as mentor to junior developers, and helping everyone upskill
What you'll need:
* At least 5 years of professional experience as a software engineer
* Previous experience leading a small team of engineers
* Expertise in frontend development using React and Typescript. In practice this likely means you have spent either more than two years as a dedicated frontend engineer, or more than four years doing full stack development
* A degree of comfort in working on backend systems. You don’t have to be an expert here, but we do want you to be keen to upskill if you aren’t
* Competence in at least one additional general purpose programming language. The majority of our backend is written in Go, with some additional components written in Python, but it’s fine if your experience is in something different - your overall approach to development is more important than the languages you know
* To have worked in small start up before, and to have a good sense of the limitations this imposes and the trade-offs involved
* The ability to be flexible, adaptable, and thrive in a rapidly changing environment
* The right to work in the UK and the ability to come into our London office at least once a week
* Passion for our mission
What's nice to have:
* Experience with some or all of the other technologies we use in our stack, including: Go, Python, Postgres, Kubernetes and AWS
* Experience in devops/infrastructure work or secure development practices
* Experience leading a team in a small start up environment
What's in it for you:
* A competitive salary range of £80-95k as well as attractive options package
* Pension matching to 5% (on qualified earnings)
* Comprehensive health insurance policy provided by Aviva
* £60 per month against gym or training costs
* Take mental health days, no questions asked
* Recommended 28 days of annual leave (not including bank holidays)
* Flexible working hours
* Cycle to work scheme
* Opportunity to purchase a work-from-home set-up
* Shared parental benefits and leave available (applicable for either parent, as well as for births or adoptions)
* Caregiving benefits and leave available
* Regular team socials, including celebrating company milestones, team socials, charity work or holiday parties

If this sounds like a team you'd like to join, a mission you'd like to be part of and a role you'd thrive in, then apply now! And if you’re not sure whether you’re what we’re looking for - send us your CV anyway! We love to hear from people who are passionate about what we do, and we always take the view that a good cultural fit (and mission alignment) is much more important than ticking all the “qualifications, skills and experience” boxes. Whatever skills you bring to the table and whatever background you're coming from, we welcome you to start a conversation with us. The time to act is now.
We also believe that diversity is the cornerstone of innovation. We embrace uniqueness and continually strive for equity for all. Ultimately, our team powers Emitwise.
