Job overview
We have a fantastic opportunity to work for the Major Trauma Clinical Coordinator Team (MTCC). As the Peninsula Trauma Centre, University Hospitals Plymouth has a well-established team of MTCCs. With the trust due to open the Major Trauma ward in December 2024, it is an exciting time to join us.
The MTCC Team is responsible for coordinating the care, rehabilitation, repatriation, and transfer of all major trauma patients while ensuring seamless case management for all Major Trauma Centre (MTC) patients within the Trust. Essential components of this role include clinical coordination and facilitation of safe, appropriate care for MTC patients during the acute phase and onwards during their stay.
The post holders will need to be enthusiastic, dynamic, and excellent communicators with effective influencing and negotiating skills, and will be required to work with multi-disciplinary teams across the organisation. A variable shift pattern will be required over a seven-day period.
The successful applicant must have recent clinical experience working with Major Trauma patients and possess good organisational skills.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work in a small group of multi-professional Major Trauma Centre Coordinators (MTCC) responsible for case management during the acute phase of care for all patients admitted with major trauma injuries. They will work closely alongside and provide clinical leadership for the data coordinators in the team, as well as the governance, training, research, and quality improvement leads. Responsibilities include:
1. Assisting in the delivery of an advanced level of care for patients attending the Emergency Department (trauma team activations) and those admitted to the Major Trauma Service.
2. Navigating the patient through the entire pathway from ED to discharge from the MTC.
3. Utilising in-depth knowledge of the care pathway to provide advanced clinical coordination from admission to discharge or transfer of care.
4. Supporting ongoing assessments of patients and assisting medical staff in completing secondary and tertiary surveys/assessments.
5. Communicating with patients and providing evidence-based rationale for their treatment plans.
6. Attending and coordinating multidisciplinary team meetings and Major Trauma ward rounds.
7. Providing specialist advice and support to medical and nursing staff and the wider MDT.
8. Leading the development of guidelines and policies to support evidence-based practice.
9. Ensuring compliance with national and local standards.
Person specification
Knowledge and experience
* Relevant, recent post-registration experience working at a senior level in Emergency, Critical Care, Orthopaedic care, or Neurosurgery in an acute setting.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Experience in patient pathway management.
Qualifications
* NMC registered.
* Competent in Advanced Trauma Nursing (ATLS / TNCC / ETC or TCAR).
Aptitude & Abilities
* Effective influencing or negotiating skills with senior health care professionals.
* Ability to articulate treatment processes clearly to patients and relatives.
