Job overview
A one year fixed term, part time (22.5 hrs per week) contract, to provide psychological support and counselling to patients living in Dorset with a diagnosis of cancer, their partners and families (age 18 +).
Main duties of the job
1. To provide psychological support and counselling service to patients with a diagnosis of cancer, their partners and families (age 18+) living in Dorset.
2. To provide pre and post-bereavement counselling.
3. To support staff working with these patient groups.

Person specification
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
* In depth and significant experience as a counsellor.
* A recognised Diploma in Counselling with Clinical training in the theory and practice of counselling, leading to eligibility for accreditation/registration with an appropriate professional body.
* Certificate in Online and Telephone counselling.
* Further training in a recognised model of psychological therapy.
* Knowledge of a range of resources/support programmes in the community and how to access them.
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
* Experience of the assessment and psychological treatment of people with a range of common mental health problems.
* Experience of triaging referrals and directing clients to optimal services based on initial new patient assessment.
* Experience of working in health care settings.
* Experience of managing own caseload independently.
* Experience in the provision of counselling to clients with long term medical conditions.
* Previous experience with data input on IT systems.
* Experience of multi-disciplinary working.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
* Skills in the assessment and evaluation of risk associated with mental ill health.
* Skills in the assessment and evaluation of risk associated with physical ill health.
* Skills in the presentation and dissemination of complex, emotionally sensitive information orally and in writing to authorised others.
* Skills in eliciting highly sensitive information relating to behaviour/state of mind.
* Ability to reassure and empathise but to be able to gain agreement to comply with therapeutic regimes and goal-specific outcomes.
* Competent IT skills and data input.
* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, adequate to enable post holder to carry out role effectively.
* Skills in report writing, policy review, and development of patient information leaflets.
