This post in Paediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition is a 10 PA post replacing a Consultant who will be retiring. The postholder will support the current demand for out-patient and in-patient activity in the Gastroenterology department, including supporting the Trust-wide Nutrition Support and Intestinal Failure Service.
The department is a regional tertiary gastroenterology service providing for children with acute and chronic intestinal disorders. It manages one of the largest number of children under 16 years of age with Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Europe and one of the largest cohorts of children with Intestinal Failure. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in all areas of paediatric gastroenterology and will undertake diagnostic procedures (upper gastrointestinal endoscopy & colonoscopy).
This post is designed to support the inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology service and in managing intestinal failure, with the Nutrition Support Team, including endoscopy and wireless capsule endoscopy.
The Job plan will offer 10 programmed activities per week. Fixed weekly sessions vary according to service duties. During the on service week, the consultant is responsible for all in patients.
This arrangement allows for simpler communication and more efficient ward rounds.

Duties vary according to whether on service week and would include:
1. Average of 2.5 outpatient clinics/week
2. Endoscopy lists and wireless capsule endoscopy cases
3. Handover sessions and Business meeting
4. 5 multidisciplinary ward rounds per week (when on ward service) or a Nutrition Support ward rounds when on Nutrition Service
5. Radiology and histology review meetings
6. Parenteral nutrition meeting with nutritional care team weekly
Service
The Service Consultant manages all the Gastroenterology in-patient activity and reviews in-patients under other specialties as Gastroenterology consultations. Domiciliary activity is managed by telephone support for regional network colleagues and families at home by departmental nursing and medical staff. Consultant input is provided each day in managing outpatients at home (SBARs) to provide assessment and treatment at home and prevent admission to hospital. Patients attending for day case admissions for infusions and other treatments may be reviewed and emergency endoscopy for patients with gastrointestinal bleeding. The service consultant grades referrals for outpatient and inpatient review.
The Consultant will supervise one Nutrition Support Ward round, teaching and training and daily support for Parenteral Nutrition prescribing. There will be two out-patient clinics and one endoscopy list each week.
Non-service week
The consultant will be based in clinic, endoscopy and office-based admin. There will be two or three clinics and one or two endoscopy lists, averaging four direct clinical care sessions per week, with allocated time for clinical administration (letters, results and reports).
