Job Description:
Avon is a division of HarperCollins, one of the UK’s most prolific, diverse and innovative multi-platform publishers. As Editor, you will provide editorial and desk editing support across the team as well as establishing and acquiring your own list. You will have ownership of your own stable of authors, seeing them through from acquisition to publication for both physical and digital editions. You will work on a range of titles across different genres, creating strategies to launch your books to the top of the charts. This role has great potential for growth and will suit digitally-savvy candidates with initiative and energy.
Key Tasks and Accountabilities:
1. Editorial:
* Ownership of and main point of contact for own stable of authors.
* Work on structural and line edits of own authors.
* Desk editing own books, working closely with the production team.
* Understanding and wider reading of the UK commercial women’s fiction and crime/thriller market.
* Briefing jackets and liaising with designers.
* Copywriting and checking sales/marketing material.
* Build and foster relationships with agents.
* Creating vision documents for new acquisitions.
* Ownership of metadata/AIs for individual authors.
* Writing cover/catalogue/Bookseller copy as required.
* Proofreading jacket copy and other literature.
* Reading, reporting, circulating and rejection of submissions.
* Produce timely launch documents.
* Supporting the team on a small number of titles.
* Presenting titles at meetings.
1. Digital:
* Ensure best-in-class metadata.
* Create innovative digital campaigns.
* Liaise with in-house digital teams.
* Prepare and present titles at digital meetings.
* Ensure awareness of physical retailers' needs.
* Create content for customer presentations.
* Work closely with publicists for maximum exposure.
* Attend launches and festivals as required.
2. General:
* Negotiate deals for new acquisitions with agents.
* Liaise with picture research and rights teams.
Skills Required:
* Experience of working within the publishing industry.
* Sound market knowledge of commercial fiction.
* Experience of desk editing processes.
* Full knowledge of publishing processes.
* Experience of working directly with authors.
* Experience of design programmes such as Photoshop, InDesign or Canva.
* Strong awareness of market trends.
