East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust
The Anaesthetic Department at William Harvey Hospital is looking to recruit a dynamic and conscientious individual to join our team of dedicated clinicians for a year. William Harvey Hospital is a large district general hospital providing care for the diverse population across East Kent. The hospital provides surgical services for the regional head and neck cancer service, colorectal cancer and other specialties, including gynae, ENT, trauma surgery, breast, paediatrics and ophthalmology. There is also a 24-hour pPCI cardiology service. We are a leading level 2 trauma unit and have a busy obstetric unit with 4000 deliveries a year. Vascular and urology services are based at Canterbury. Most elective orthopaedic services for the trust are now provided at the state-of-the-art Elective Orthopaedic Centre in Canterbury. There is a well-established pre-assessment service providing support for all surgical specialties. The hospital has just opened a bright, new 24-bedded intensive care unit to support our expanding services. We offer 27 days' annual leave and active support for study, quality improvement and patient safety work as part of our 'We care' improvement journey, and medical education and research.
Main duties of the job
This post, in line with the 2021 Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) curriculum for CT3 and above, involves full on-call rota participation for various emergencies and resuscitations, with consultant support until 10 pm and distant supervision afterward. Responsibilities include pre, peri, and post-operative management of surgical patients, acute pain reviews, and safe transfer of critically ill patients. Training spans various surgical specialties, complex airway cases, and regional anesthesia.
Effective communication with medical and service departments within the Trust and other hospitals is essential. The role includes teaching junior doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, with support for additional educational roles and opportunities in the pre-assessment service and multidisciplinary meetings.
The post-holder will provide anaesthetic care at William Harvey Hospital, mainly under consultant supervision, with chances for independent work based on experience. This 48-hour-per-week role includes a 1:8 on-call rota, with two junior anaesthetists covering all emergency work, collaborating closely with intensive care and ED colleagues.
