An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint an enthusiastic and experienced staff nurse for the Centre for Urgent Care (CUC) and Royal Marsden Macmillan Hotline (RMMH) based at the Chelsea site. We are looking for an outstanding individual to join a team of highly experienced nurses who provide excellent nursing care and strive to make a difference.
CUC is opened Monday to Friday from 0800 -2030H and provides advanced nursing care to patients of the Royal Marsden Hospital who present with acute symptoms related to their disease or treatment. It supports patients on an ambulatory care pathway and provides care for elective patients booked for day case procedures.
Main duties of the job
1. To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.
2. To effectively plan, manage and evaluate care of patients that are being managed on the unit including acute oncology patients, surgical and haematological patients
3. To work on the hotline (triaging, advising and prioritising patient care)
4. To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long term goals or plans.
5. To support junior staff on the unit
6. To act as a role model to others on the unit
7. To actively take part in conducting short teaching sessions on the unit
8. To be engaged in quality improvement
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
9. To provide skilled care and expertise in venepuncture and/or cannulation. To assess patients for a suitable central venous access device.
10. To provide education to patients on the care and
management of central venous access devices and to adopt a problem solving approach to managing complications with all vascular access devices.
11. To be knowledgeable of any treatment in progress in the specialty they are working in, and to adopt a problem solving approach to symptom management and minimizing adverse reactions. Once suitably trained and dependent on the clinical area, administer / check cytotoxic drugs, intravenous antibiotics, novel therapies, trial drugs and supportive therapies, including all necessary blood products.
12. To look after all patients in protective and contact isolation as necessary with strict infection control measures, while educating and giving psychosocial support to them, their families and
more junior members of staff.

Essential criteria
13. NMC Registration
14. Evidence of ongoing professional development
15. RMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointment
Desirable criteria
16. Qualification in oncology or speciality
17. Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
18. Recognised teaching qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
19. Experience in intravenous drug administration
20. Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job
Desirable criteria
21. Experience in chemotherapy administration
22. Experience in Clinical Management
23. Evidence of relevant teaching experience
24. Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff
At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
