Job overview
As a Health Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist, lead and supervise the day-to-day delivery of a diagnostic service within a section of Microbiology. Provide advanced biomedical science technical support in a specific area of expertise by providing training, advice, technical development, troubleshooting, and supervision. Maintain up-to-date knowledge and competency to practice within Microbiology by participating in preparing and processing diagnostic investigations on biological specimens in accordance with agreed protocols and standard operational procedures (SOP), ensuring the department maintains UKAS and HSE compliance as well as laboratory training status.
Main duties of the job
* Work within the Microbiology team to ensure that all specimens are processed in a timely, appropriate manner paying particular attention to detail and quality.
* Maintenance, development, and review of SOPs.
* Lead a few areas of the lab and be responsible for all documentation and techniques in that area.
* Assist in maintaining appropriate internal and external quality assurance to recognize poor performance and act accordingly.
* Assist with the receipt of goods and maintenance of consumable stocks.
* Aware of the cost of resources and work as economically as practical in achieving objectives.
* Suggest ways to improve working practices.
* Perform any other duties, commensurate with the post and in the interest of the service.
* Supervise and organize the workflow through all sections of the lab making the best possible use of available resources.
* Train and supervise junior staff.
* Liaise with consultants within and outside the department to identify and implement new techniques.
* Isolate, identify, and perform antibiotic susceptibility testing on microorganisms.
* Interpret and report results via the hospital computer system.

Achieved
* MSc or equivalents.
* Advanced knowledge of microbiology.
Experience
* Significant Band 6 experience working in a diagnostic laboratory.
* Evidence of CPD.
