Interim Matron Theatre - 6 Months Secondment Opportunity
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham is proud of its track record in delivering excellent care to our patients. As such, we are currently looking for a dynamic, creative thinking leader to join our team as Matron for Theatres.
The Trust is an Orthopaedic tertiary centre, with 14 theatres delivering complex elective orthopaedic surgery supporting specialist oncology and spinal services. The successful individual will be part of a senior team managing theatre services, prioritising the needs of patients who require our expertise.
The successful applicant does not need to demonstrate theatre experience; however, they must be interested in learning about the department and keen for a career stretch.
We are looking for an individual who is flexible, innovative, highly motivated with great people and leadership skills who wants to learn and develop within a challenging and exciting role.
You will be a strong leader who can demonstrate a proven ability to successfully lead and motivate the clinical team and be a positive and professional role model.
You must have excellent communication and influencing skills to both initiate and support change together with the tenacity and passion required to drive success.
Main duties of the job
This is an interim post for 6 months. You will be supported in the role; however, in terms of leadership and management, we want you to hit the ground running. The subject specialists will manage the list.
As a senior leader in our Trust, you will work collaboratively with the Clinical Services Manager and Clinical Medical Lead for Theatres. The role of the Matron will focus on the provision of high-quality care, visibility, professional leadership, and have a clear remit of setting and maintaining standards of clinical excellence, improving outcomes and experiences for patients.
1. To provide strong and effective leadership for all health care workers.
2. To work with the Divisional Head of Nursing and Clinical Services Manager to ensure high quality care for service users and in particular be accountable for the theatre staff development and professional standards.
3. The day-to-day operational management of the Theatre Suite with guidance from theatre experts (cluster leads): including allocation of staffing.
4. Managing and being accountable for the Theatre financial resource ensuring that it remains within budget.
Continuing professional development is encouraged, and you will be expected to promote and participate actively in education, clinical governance, audit and guidelines. You will be encouraged to take part in the wide range of educational and training opportunities.

PROFESSIONAL
1. Provide guidance, support and professional leadership to all staff within the theatre environment.
2. Provide a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.
3. Initiate, implement and evaluate quality control methods as appropriate to the theatre department.
4. Manage Control of Infection in Theatres with support from the Infection Prevention and Control Team, reporting any problems affecting the unit.
5. With support from the HON and Cluster leads, ensure all the staff within the Theatre departments are aware of their responsibility in the prevention and control of infection and wear the necessary protective clothing during Theatre procedures.
6. Demonstrate an advanced level of clinical nursing practice which remains updated according to evidence.
7. Ensure that care is planned and developed in a systematic way, in accordance with the agreed model of care.
8. Support with the investigation and monitoring of complaints and PALs enquiries within the department.
9. Support HON to deliver effective service and escalate where appropriate.
10. To lead compassionately and inclusively.
11. Line manage Cluster leads.
12. Will take accountability as a leader supporting the team and holding them to account.
13. Will embrace the PSIRF methodology of system learning keeping patients at the heart.
OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT
1. To effectively manage the Units budget for consumables and staff to ensure that the unit works within the financial framework. To provide advice and information when necessary to ensure expenditure remains in target.
2. To provide accurate written reports to the Head of Nursing, Chief Nurse and other senior divisional managers when required.
3. To coordinate the units resources to ensure effective and full utilisation of funded resources and efficient delivery of the service.
4. To assist the triumvirate to develop a quality strategy for the Theatre areas in line with the Trust's strategic objectives.
5. To manage recruitment, retention and development of theatre staff within each of the areas in collaboration with the education team.
6. To work in line with and develop integrated care policies.
7. To ensure that all staff have regular appraisals (PDR) and up-to-date development plans.
8. Encourage and manage performance through the appraisal process. Delegate work effectively, setting clear parameters of responsibility.
9. To work in line with the Matrons Handbook.
10. To ensure accurate and up-to-date documentation on both patient and staff records.
11. To provide effective management and leadership to all staff in all areas.
12. To take responsibility for risk management and clinical governance within all areas under sphere of responsibility. Ensure the triumvirate are aware of the risks and a mitigation plan as discussed.
13. Responsible for reporting instances where clinical targets may not be met in order to devise action plans and provide written reports when required.
14. Responsible for overviewing the management of the preparation/maintenance of duty rotas, on Health roster, carried out by the Clinical Lead Specialists, to ensure they provide safe staffing and the most cost-effective cover for the department.
15. Ensure staff complete relevant trust training/competencies on commencing post and keeping updates as necessary.
16. Utilise project and change management skills in order to streamline efficiency within the department as required.
17. Be responsible for HR issues within the area of responsibility, taking action as necessary, and ensure that Departmental Sisters/Charge Nurses fulfil this role within their own areas.
18. Undertake employer-related investigations as required.
19. Manage the pay and non-pay budgets within areas of responsibility.
20. To ensure own continued professional development as appropriate to area of practice.
21. To provide appropriate and consistent professional advice to the multi-disciplinary teams within the Trust, acting as a point of contact at difficult times and when support is required.
22. Lead on corporate nursing issues as identified through the appraisal process and agreed by Director of Nursing and Governance and Clinical Service Manager.
PERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
1. Work at all times within the Professional Code of Conduct for nurses, taking accountability for professional actions and ensure that others do the same.
2. Actively participate in own PDRS to identify key objectives and development needs.
