Job Requirements
The Mechanical Handling Group within the Engineering Services Facilities Engineering Technical Authority are responsible for providing technical support and design consultancy on non-nuclear and nuclear mechanical handling assets within the site; for example, cranes, hauling equipment and lifting equipment .
A new Mechanical Handling Engineer, is required to coordinate, deliver and manage work within the Mechanical Handling Group in providing their Design and Technical Authority responsibilities to the business.
The post is a non-industrial permanent full time position.
The role is predominantly desk based (a mix of office and home working) but will entail access to industrial areas (including radiologically controlled areas) across the Dockyard.
Work Experience
The primary purpose of the role is to provide professional and flexible technical accountability to the ongoing operations and maintenance of DRDL extant mechanical handling assets.
You will be responsible for the management and delivery of technical support and advice on maintaining the design intent of existing mechanical handling systems and equipment, including:
Attendance at Authorisation Group meetings;
Periodic reviews of maintenance regimes and activities;
Specifying replacement equipment/components and supporting the production of configuration documentation for permanent modifications;
Maintaining configuration of technical drawings and documentation;
Reviewing concession applications;
Responding to formal Technical Queries ;
Undertaking asset condition surveys ;
Undertaking obsolescence studies;
Preparing asset health reports for critical assets;
Supporting fault diagnosis and rectification;
Identifying defects through Defect Condition Reports;
Reviewing industry codes, standards and legislation.
Generating and writing scopes of works and statements of requirements for projects.
Answering and delivering technical projects and packages of works.
This type of work entails the application of the Design & Safety Processes across the design lifecycle (Start-up, Concept, Scheme, Detail, Implementation and Operations), undertaking a variety of defined activities and deliverables, and following the appropriate levels of technical governance.
The deliverables and support required includes:
Capturing requirements;
Design development (drawings, calculations and documents);
Specification writing;
Producing commissioning documentation;
Managing technical queries and design deviations;
Providing support to implementation phase ( technical advice during manufacturing, installation and commissioning witnessing Factory acceptance testing etc.)
Additionally, but not mandatory, is the ability to manage and allocate appropriate personnel to the Design Consultancy function of the department where the activities are generally focused on the provision of new, or modification to, crane designs, lifting equipment and systems as well as injection of new capabilities and undertaking life extension activities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences
Required:
Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree;
Knowledge of the design process and evidence of the design and substantiation of systems and components;
Extensive knowledge of the general regulations, legislation and standards that are applicable to the design life cycle of mechanical handling equipment;
Proficiency in understanding/production of hand calculations/FEA;
Proficiency in understanding/production of electrical/ mechanical engineering drawings;
Knowledge and awareness of cranes, crane safety and associated mechanical handling systems;
Understanding of nuclear industry and/or other safety critical environments.

Experience of cranes/ lifting equipment and crane operations, especially safety critical and safety related systems;
A working knowledge of electrical/ mechanical / hydraulic systems as typical to cranes and hauling equipment.
Qualifications:
A minimum of an engineering degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering .
Professional registration is desirable.
