To provide a high level of clinical care within the Northumbria Community Dental Service/Oral Surgery department, supporting the clinicians in all aspects of clinical practice and ensure the smooth facilitation of all dental/oral surgery clinics across Northumbria Healthcare Trust.
To provide dental nursing support for vulnerable patients specific to the Community Dental Service including adults and children with complex medical, social and behavioral needs.
To provide clinical support to the dental clinicians, including specialist dentists, in the provision of a comprehensive range of dental services completed by the Community Dental and Oral Surgery department including:
• General Anaesthetic
• Inhalation Sedation
• Orthodontic Treatment
• Oral Surgery
• Domiciliary Care
• Epidemiology Survey
Care will be provided trust wide across a variety of locations in the community including hospitals, community health centres, care homes and schools.
To carry out a dental nursing role in specialist areas such as sedation, dental radiography, orthodontics, maxillo-facial, health promotion.
To support the senior nurses and nurse manager in clinic management to facilitate the smooth running of clinical care and maintain national standards.

• Provides pre and post operative advice and instruction for specialist dental procedures e.g. orthodontic, maxillo-facial, anaesthesia; health education.
• Care and reassurance to the patients during treatment, ensuring they are comfortable and informed throughout.
• Clinical advice to patients/carers/relatives either in person (Oral Hygiene instruction, pre and post-operative instructions), or over the telephone (patients ringing for emergency advice). They will also be available to answer patient's questions regarding their treatment/care plan.
• Responsible for organising patient appointments, and where necessary for liaison with wards and other departments to ensure good quality patient care.
• At the end of each session dental nurses have the responsibility of ensuring patients are safely and appropriately discharged and the clinical areas are secured, including safe storage of emergency drugs.
• To be responsible for decontamination of all dental instruments, work surfaces and dental chair using appropriate methods of infection control, at the beginning and end of the clinical session and after each patient. This includes the operation and daily maintenance of autoclaves and other decontaminating machinery such as ultrasonic baths.
