Job summary The purpose of the role is to provide evidence based surgical assistance under the direct supervision of elective and emergency surgeons. The role is part of a multidisciplinary surgical team (MDST) with defined parameters of practice. The post holder is a Registered Nurse (RN) or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) with extensive clinical experience and holds a recognised post graduate qualification in Surgical First Assistant or equivalent. The post holder actively contributes to clinical effectiveness, innovation, and change; and service improvement across the MDST and ARI theatre service. The post holder contributes to student learning and may act as an assessor and supervisor. The post holder receives mentorship from an assigned surgeon who assesses their competence against National competency standards for SFAs. Contributes to service improvement of specialised perioperative practice and emerging surgical modalities. Main duties of the job The post holder is an NMC Registered Nurse or HCPC Operating Department Practitioner with demonstrated completion and attainment of a post graduate Surgical First Assistant course and portfolio. Demonstrated extensive experience as a Band 5 Perioperative Practitioner across multiple surgical specialisms, modalities and disciplines e.g. scrub, anaesthetics and/or recovery. The SFA will have a broad knowledge of the perioperative (AFPP) clinical guidelines and standards followed by NHS Grampian. Demonstrated specialist technical skills for SFA including pre-op visiting/planning, patient positioning, application of tourniquet, tissue retraction, camera holding, superficial diathermy, haemostasis, suction, suture management and wound closure. The post holder will possess excellent team-working, communication and leadership skills and have the ability to motivate and influence others and work using own initiative. Works collaboratively with surgeon supervisor sharing clinical decision making and accountability within the scope of their practice. Ability to work flexibly based on changing clinical demands.
