The starting wage is $19.58 per hour with step raise after years 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Responsibilities and Qualifications of a Corrections Deputy:
This is a full-time position that works in a 24-hour, adult detention facility. Work assignments are 12-hour shifts (6am to 6pm or 6pm to 6am) with every other FRI/SAT/SUN off, working 7 out of 14 days. Environment might be uncomfortable and involve a significant chance of incurring injury. Assignments involve substantial face-to-face contact with inmates. A Corrections Deputy uses independent judgment in making decisions requiring interpretation and application of departmental guidelines to specific situations.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Observing inmates’ activities to detect unusual or prohibited behavior.
2. Responding quickly to return phone calls from this office when off duty.
3. Preparing written reports after responding to critical incidents.
4. Counting inmates under their supervision several times each shift.
5. Conducting thorough searches of inmates and their housing areas.
6. Monitoring feeding, recreational activities, inmate visits, and supervising inmate workers.
7. Ensuring that security systems and other equipment in the facility are in operating condition.
8. Operating computerized equipment such as booking systems, cameras, door controls, and intercom systems.
9. Being proficient in the use and carry of department firearms, tasers, pepper spray, and handcuffing.
Minimum Requirements:
Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED. Completion of 160 MSCTC Academy preferred but not mandatory at time of hire. Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license. Candidates must be able to pass a medical exam, drug screen, and psychological evaluation. A thorough background investigation will be conducted. Ability to complete first aid certification is required. Knowledge of security procedures and techniques is necessary. Candidates must maintain composure during stressful situations and react quickly and calmly in emergencies. Physical requirements include the performance of strenuous tasks requiring muscular strength, coordination, and cardiovascular endurance. Ability to learn and apply self-defense and other procedures for dealing with hostile or violent inmates is essential. Candidates must pass all department training to include taser, pepper spray, handcuffing, and firearms.
An individual with any of the following is ineligible for consideration for employment:
A felony conviction; a pending felony or misdemeanor charge; a domestic violence conviction; or an outstanding warrant.
