Job Details
Overview: The Production Manager is accountable for overseeing the daily production of the Industrial Avenue production facility at Clarence Farm Services Ltd (CFS) in Truro, NS. The Production Manager will report to the Operations Manager. The responsibilities of this position include managing production staff, ensuring safety compliance, optimizing production processes, maintaining quality standards, and supporting overall business goals. The Production Manager will work closely with other members of the management team to ensure the efficient operation of the plant while maintaining high-quality product output and compliance with regulatory standards. Base pay depends on job-related skills, knowledge, and experience. This role is eligible for a discretionary bonus/merit award, in addition to a comprehensive benefits package.
Duties:
1. Schedules and supervises production runs based on sales orders, inventory, and formulation requirements.
2. Manages mill employees, mill operators, mill cleaners, and lead-hands. Ensures proper training, efficiency, and adherence to SOPs.
3. Monitors and approves employee timecards through the ADP portal. Discusses discrepancies/patterns with Operations Manager to develop a resolution.
4. Responds to deviations or contamination concerns. Elevates when necessary to the Operations Manager.
5. Coordinates outgoing logistics with trucking contractors.
6. Posts the overtime schedule for weekend/holiday work. Selects workers for weekend/holiday work based on rules outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
7. Provides required inventory counts to admin staff on month-end days.
8. Coordinates booking of annual vacation for all mill employees.
9. Tracks staffing requirements and scheduling. Provides a business case to the Operations Manager for required hirings.
10. Supports Operations Manager in maintaining workplace safety programs by ensuring production team members abide.
11. Monitors operational budget provided by Operations Manager. Works to control labour and ingredient loss costs.
12. Ensures efficient equipment usage.
13. Tracks throughput, downtime, product rework, waste, and efficiency metrics. The development of these metrics is done in consultation with the Operations Manager.
14. Collaborates with the Maintenance Manager for planned downtime events and preventative maintenance programs.
15. Delivers discipline and performance management when required. Ensures all discipline and performance management is recorded and copied to appropriate parties.
16. Works closely with QA/QC.
17. Identifies and reports mechanical issues affecting production. Ensures proper Work Orders are entered. Coordinates with the Maintenance Manager for timely repairs of critical equipment.
18. Ensures accurate usage of ingredients, reconciles daily feed outputs, and communicates ingredient needs to purchasing/logistics.
19. Tracks and documents trucking wait times and loading delays.
20. Schedules re-feed usage and keeps an accurate inventory.
21. Ensures injuries are properly documented using the workplace incident report system.
Skills:
1. Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage teams effectively and foster a positive, engaged workplace.
2. Knowledge of agriculture, particularly livestock feed ingredients, medications, and good manufacturing practices.
3. Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
4. Ability to analyze data, plan production schedules, and prioritize tasks effectively.
5. High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.
6. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
7. Results-oriented with strong analytical skills.
8. Proficient in Microsoft Office.
9. Excellent mentoring, coaching, and people management skills.
10. Previous experience in a Unionized production environment is an asset.
11. Previous experience in an agricultural production facility with an understanding of CFIA regulations is an asset.
