Job overview
The Haematology/Oncology ward and Haematology Day Unit is advertising a band 6 vacancy. The ward specialises in haematological/Oncological disorders, including administration of chemotherapy, blood products, venepuncture and cannulation, caring for the acutely ill i.e. neutropenic septic patient as well as the management of patients post stem cell transplant. We also care for patients with oncological emergencies, palliation, symptom management and end of life care.
The Day Unit treats Haematology patients with SACT and supportive therapies.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for a dynamic, motivated individual who is able to lead by clinical excellence. Chemotherapy skills are essential, and a good knowledge of haematology/oncology is essential. A mentorship qualification is desirable, but not essential.
The applicant will be expected to work long days, nights and weekends to support the team.
We are working closely with the Sussex Cancer Center, oncology in-patients and PRH haem/onc day unit, therefore the suitable candidate needs to be willing to support those areas as well. You will be taking on additional specialist clinical skills as well as teaching junior staff. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Deputy Sister/Charge nurse is a member of the multi-disciplinary team providing skilled care and expert advice to Malignant and Non-Malignant Haematology/Oncology patients and their families/partners/friends in the clinical setting of the Haematology/Oncology Unit.
The post holder will lead by clinical excellence, the management and support of staff, administration of blood products, intravenous therapy, and cytotoxic chemotherapy. The post holder will have the ability to identify the particular needs of these patients and will provide information, support and specialist clinical expertise to enable nursing staff and Haematology/Oncology patients to understand and cope with their diagnosis and treatment.
The post holder will assist in the management and organisation of the nursing service in the clinical cancer areas. This will include managing shifts and the rotation between the Haematology/Oncology ward and Day Units as required by the service. Teaching and support of more junior staff and those in training is expected.

Qualifications
* NMC Registered Nurse
* SACT/Oncology/Haematology course or equivalent experience
* UKONS SACT Passport
* Experience in supervising junior staff
* Leadership course
* Physical assessment course
* Mentorship qualification, or working towards
Skills
* Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
* Competent in intravenous therapy and SACT drug administration - minimum 6 months experience
* Knowledge of current SACT regimens. Knowledge of SACT related policies and procedures
* Evidence of managing highly dependent patients
* 6 Months minimum experience of leading a shift
