Your new role
In this role, your expertise as a tax professional will be crucial in supporting the tax strategy and maintaining the necessary control measures within indirect tax. As a VAT Accountant, you will work closely with the VAT Manager to fulfil the university’s global taxpliance obligations and advise on various tax matters.
Your responsibilities will include:
1. Assist the Group and International Tax Manager in identifying and addressing priority tax issues and maximising potential VAT recoveries or mitigating tax issues.
2. Support the VAT team, contributing to the submission of the quarterly VAT returns and annual adjustments in line with statutory deadlines.
3. Help ensure the integrity of data included in the VAT returns by participating in the implementation and management of appropriate review processes.
4. Provide advice on the VAT treatment of research and enterprise funding bid applications and budgets, contractual issues, VAT efficiencies and encourage best practice.
5. Liaise with internal and external tax advisors for specialist advice as needed but with the aim of minimising external advisor fees.
6. Provide technical tax support and expertise and ensure the tax implications of major capital investments are fully considered and understood.
7. Participate in VAT and other taxpliance audits; ensurepliance with financial regulations and procedures.
8. Contribute to the design and implementation of a new VAT training strategy, and help staff across the organisation to develop awareness and understanding of VAT liability andpliance issues.
9. Maintain technical tax expertise through continuous personal development and attend conferences and training as required.
10. Develop and maintain professional links with HMRC and external agencies.
What you'll need to succeed For success in this role as a VAT Accountant, you should have a strong VAT background and, ideally, tax experience in the HE sector or another largeplex organisation. This role is also suitable for someone transitioning from practice with a broad understanding ofplex VAT issues.

11. Ideally, a CTA, ACCA, ATT or other relevant qualification such as being qualified by experience.
12. Ability tomunicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
13. While leadership skills are beneficial, the focus is on being able to work well within a team and contribute to the tax function.
