Role : Research Associate in Peatland Science
Department: School of Geography and Environmental Science
Grade: 6/7 (£31,414 - £40,543 per annum)
Responsible to: Principal Investigator
Campus: Coleraine
(Fixed-Term until 31st August 2027 / Full-Time)
Job Purpose :
Ulster University is working with fourteen institutions in three jurisdictions on the large-scale Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water project. The project is jointly funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Development in Northern Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland, and UK Research and Innovation.
The post holder will develop research and knowledge exchange on a working upland hill farm as part of a Monitoring and Modelling Platform in the Co-Centre. While developing a Tier 3 carbon emissions factor from upland peatland areas is an aim of the hill farm platform, it will be important to quantify the ecosystem co-benefits and trade-offs that may result from upland peat restoration measures. Therefore, the researcher will bring their own expertise to the post while maximising the benefits of working with a large network of scientists from academia and government. The data generated will be crucial for developing Northern Ireland’s peatland strategies, providing an evidence base for net zero policy reviews, and supporting the development of results based agri-environmental schemes.
Please be advised that due to the minimum salary thresholds imposed by the UKVI, this post will not qualify for university sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route.
