JOB SUMMARY:
To support the Legal Department in its work with UN agencies and other international, regional and national organisations and institutions; the ICS Maritime Law Committee and Insurance Committee; and other ICS departments, committees, and member associations. This role involves conducting high-quality and timely research and analysis to support the provision of advice on legal and insurance policy issues affecting the interests of ICS members, as well as providing legal advice internally to ICS, Marisec, and the Company Secretary. Additionally, the role supports the efficient and effective operation of the Maritime Law and Insurance Committees and assists in delivering legal training to both internal staff and external students from various academic institutions.
JOB CONTENT:
1. Assisting and supporting preparations for ICS participation in meetings of international, regional, and national governmental and non-governmental organisations, including IMO and the IOPC Funds, the EU institutions, and other relevant entities.
2. Assisting and supporting the timely delivery of reports on significant developments to the ICS membership.
3. Together with other Legal team members, supporting the efficient and effective operation of the Maritime Law Committee and the Insurance Committee, as well as other ICS committees, sub-committees, and panels as required.
4. Undertaking high-quality research and analysis of complex legal and insurance issues affecting ICS members and producing concise reports.
5. Reviewing and updating legal and insurance content on the ICS website.
6. Supporting the preparation of ICS meeting papers and reports, as well as follow-up actions.
7. Assisting with administrative matters, including the review and maintenance of the Legal Department filing system and preparations for meetings.
8. Supporting the provision of company secretarial services for ICS and Marisec.
EDUCATION AND SKILLS:
1. As a minimum, the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in Law, or a bachelor’s degree in another subject together with a Postgraduate Diploma in Law, and preferably a professional law qualification.
2. Excellent written English and communication skills, with attention to accuracy and detail.
3. Knowledge of and interest in international maritime law.
4. Logical, analytical thinking and ability to conduct detailed legal analysis and produce briefings, reports, and presentations.
5. Ability to explain complex issues and arguments concisely and comprehensibly.
6. Able to demonstrate general knowledge of and interest in politics and international affairs.
7. Ability to be diplomatic when explaining positions with which others may not agree.
8. Willingness to travel abroad.
9. Experience with Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint; ability to use or willingness to learn Microsoft 365 tools and WordPress.
