Overview
This is a fulltime position for a Medical Assistant with the department of Otolaryngology. Under direct supervision, this position will assist with clinical assignments and administrative duties for assigned care teams within the department.
Responsibilities
1. Assists providers as a medical assistant in the clinical care of patients, by obtaining vital signs, height, weight, temperature, and blood pressure. Participates in chart preparations to gather pertinent data relevant to visits.
2. Responsible for timely communication of patient needs and requests by providing appropriate follow-up for patients, including medical imaging requests, cardiac or medical clearance, medication and prior authorizations, allergy testing or treatments, scheduling of patient appointments, transmission of laboratory orders, and completion of FMLA and other disability documents.
3. Completes delegated tasks such as patient messages, prescription refills, lab results, referrals, home health agency requests, medication prior authorizations, patient forms, and physician follow-up.
4. Coordinates services with specialists, including radiation oncology, pulmonology, endocrinology, nutritional counseling, or social services consultation. Documents all correspondence and interventions in the electronic health record.
5. Maintains inventory of medical and office supplies and submits reorder requests to the office manager or appropriate staff member. Cleans, sterilizes, and maintains used instrumentation per department protocol.
6. Will travel to other Otolaryngology practices to provide support when needed.
7. Facilitates scheduling of surgeries with the surgery scheduler.
8. The successful candidate shall respond to questions from patients, family members, faculty/residents, and other health care providers in a timely and professional manner. Patient inquiries should be answered on the same day they are received. If a patient is not home at the first attempt, a notation should be made in the medical record. All patient conversations must be documented in the electronic medical record.
9. Participates in all staff meetings, education lectures, and quality improvement activities.
10. Follows EVMS Medical Group protocols related to infection control, environmental safety, and patient confidentiality. Completes annual recertification for Blood Borne Pathogens, HIPAA Compliance Training, Respiratory FIT, and IT Policy. Maintains current CPR certification and any updates relating to M.A. Certification.
Qualifications
* Certification as a Medical Assistant such as RMA or CMA is required.
* Completion of BLS training and recertification every 2 years.
Previous medical office experience with relevant functions in a doctor’s office is preferred. Must have some working knowledge of computers. A customer service-oriented individual is required.
