Enterprise and Employability Coordinator at Giroscope, Hull, UK
You will be responsible for supporting the delivery of our new project aimed at getting more people cycling more often and more sustainably by providing them with loaned or low-cost bikes and making affordable repairs available locally. This will involve assisting the Project Supervisor in the renovation, repair and maintenance of bicycles as well as opening up the workshop independently on a Saturday.
Your primary role will be that of a bike mechanic. It will be hands-on; based at our workshop on Selby Street, and involve completing repairs, communicating with customers, encouraging more people to cycle, and reducing scrap by bringing old bicycles back into use.
Giroscope is a community-based organisation focused on neighbourhood regeneration in Hull. Since 1985, Giroscope has been supporting disadvantaged individuals and addressing inequality by providing affordable homes to people in housing need, and offering skills training and volunteer opportunities. Giroscope’s Bike Project is about making cycling accessible to people in the local HU3 community.
Key Duties
1. Dealing with customers to assess and programme repairs and completing those repairs to a high standard.
2. Identifying suitable bikes for customers to loan and purchase from the bikes we will be renovating and servicing.
3. Responsibility for aspects of workshop maintenance to include cleaning, tidying, managing stock levels and general organisation.
4. Responsibility for opening and closing up the workshop on a Saturday and at other times as needed.
5. Delivering excellent customer service, helping people to find the right bikes for them, and helping to show them how to complete basic repairs independently.
6. Supporting with the delivery of 4 x ‘Family Days’ in West Park designed to encourage people to cycle.
7. Ensuring that Health and Safety protocols are followed in the workshop and work is carried out to the required standards.
8. Ensure that the needs of Giroscope volunteers, tenants and service users are at the core of the work undertaken.
9. To maintain confidentiality and observe data protection and safeguarding protocol at all times.
Person Specification
1. Recognised Level 2 Bike Mechanic qualification - Essential (E)
2. At least 2 years of experience in bike repair (E)
3. Experience of stripping down and re-building bicycles to high safety standards (E)
4. Experience of working with disadvantaged people with a wide range of abilities and support needs (E)
5. Experience of working in a public facing, customer service related role (E)
6. Ability to work independently to complete repairs in a time efficient and safe way (E)
7. Ability to undertake a wide range of repairs to a high standard (E)
8. Ability to deal with a high volume of customers, and to prioritise work effectively during busy periods (E)
9. Ability to stay calm under pressure and still make good decisions (E)
10. A positive attitude: a ‘can-do’ approach, good work ethic and willingness to learn (including attending training) (E)
11. The ability to build positive relationships with colleagues and volunteers (E)

Details
Hours: 15 hours per week. 9.30am – 2.30pm three days per week (including Saturday)
Salary: £12.21 per hour
