Job Title: Teaching Assistant - SEMH
Location: Poole, Dorset
An outstanding SEND school in Poole is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistant to support children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, as well as those diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This is a full-time position with an immediate start, offering a rare opportunity to join a nurturing environment where small class sizes of 8-10 pupils ensure personalized attention and care. The successful candidate will be integral in helping to foster a supportive learning atmosphere, one that allows each student to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.
As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, they will work closely with the classroom teacher to implement inclusive educational programs tailored to individual needs, demonstrating patience, empathy, and understanding throughout their daily interactions with young learners.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assist in developing and delivering individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with SEMH, ASC, and ADHD.
2. Provide one-to-one or small group support, both within the classroom and in separate sessions, to help pupils engage with their learning and achieve their full potential.
3. Implement behavior management strategies and interventions, as per the guidelines provided by the school and external professionals.
4. Establish trusting relationships with pupils, acting as a positive role model and offering emotional support when needed.
5. Collaborate with teachers, SENCO, and other support staff to ensure a cohesive approach to the educational and wellbeing needs of students.
6. Participate in training and professional development opportunities provided by the school to enhance skills specific to the SEMH field.
7. Assist with the preparation of teaching materials and resources, adapting them to meet the varied learning styles of students.
8. Monitor and record student progress, providing feedback to teachers and contributing to the assessment process.
9. Contribute to creating a safe, secure, and inclusive educational environment.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
1. A psychology graduate or an individual with significant experience working in an SEND or SEMH setting.
2. Patient, empathetic, and passionate about making a difference in the lives of children with additional needs.
3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
4. Strong organizational and time-management skills, with a proactive approach to tackling challenges.
5. A firm believer in inclusivity, with the ability to adapt teaching styles and techniques to support diverse learners.
6. Holds a relevant teaching assistant qualification or is willing to pursue one if not already obtained.
Working Hours: The role of SEMH Teaching Assistant will require a commitment to a standard school day, from 08:30 to 16:00. The school is particularly keen on fostering a culture of professional growth and, as such, is committed to investing in the continuous training and development of its staff.
