The postholder will provide and be responsible for the assessment, implementation and evaluation of peri-operative care programmes. Clinically, he/she may be required to work as a scrubbed surgical assistant, circulating assistant, anaesthetic assistant or recovery room practitioner. He/she may also take responsibility for the work of a team of theatre staff for a span of duty or operating list. Multi-skilling will be encouraged and those wishing to broaden their range of clinical skills will be supported.
Main duties of the job
1. To ensure high standards of practice through example and teaching.
2. To assist and supervise junior theatre staff.
3. To be able to demonstrate a speciality knowledge within a defined clinical area.
4. To participate in patient focused care.
5. To maintain and improve personal knowledge of current trends and developments within operating theatre practice.
6. To assist in liaison and communication with hospital department and medical staff.
7. To maintain accurate records of care.
8. To ensure all Health & Safety measures are followed according to local policies.
9. To report all incidents, accidents and complaints to Theatre Manager or acting deputy.
10. To participate in the induction of new staff to the unit.
11. To participate in the teaching and assessment of all learners in accordance with the needs of the department and the requirements of their course of study.
12. To participate in the effective management of human and material resources.
13. To act up or deputise as deemed necessary by senior staff.
14. To undertake other duties within the scope of the post as agreed with senior staff or departmental manager.
15. Ensuring correct labelling and dispatching of pathology specimens from theatre to other sites.
16. To understand and adhere to Trust policies relating to the security and control of drugs.

Person Specification
Education
* In possession of Diploma/Degree in Operating Department Practice or Qualified RGN.
* Evidence of continued professional development.
Knowledge and skills
* Sound interpersonal and communication skills.
* Post-registration experience in a theatre or surgical environment.
* Knowledge of patient administration IT systems.
