Senior Clinical Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
The role is for a fixed-term Senior Clinical Fellow post in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, available for a six month period from 10th February - 5th August 2025.
The post is based at Rotherham General Hospital and is a replacement post for the vacant Specialty Registrar position in the department.
The post is suitable for those in surgical training prior to OMFS Specialty training and offers an excellent opportunity for a surgical trainee to increase their experience in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. It is appropriate for those seeking CREST accreditation.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder would occupy the only middle-grade training post in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Rotherham General Hospital, which has an excellent reputation for providing surgical training. It would offer a fantastic opportunity for a junior trainee to significantly increase their surgical experience in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in a supportive environment.
The post requires the occupant to provide non-resident on call services as part of the OMFS middle grade on call rota, covering the OMFS units at Rotherham General Hospital and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The on-call frequency is 1 in 5 weekdays, and 1 in 7 weekends. The on-call commitment would be fully supported by the OMFS Consultants at both sites.
Job responsibilities
The provision of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery services for the Rotherham, Doncaster and Worksop area is delivered from the OMFS departments at Rotherham General Hospital and Mexborough Montagu Hospital, Doncaster. All acute operating and elective major operating takes place at Rotherham General Hospital. Day surgery services, outpatient Minor Oral Surgery operating, and outpatient clinics are delivered on both sites.
The Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at Rotherham General Hospital treats the full spectrum of OMFS diagnoses. The department treats a large volume of maxillofacial trauma, and in addition to the routine management of trauma, the consultants in the department are experienced in the use of up-to-date techniques such as orbital reconstruction using custom-made orbital implants, and the management of fractures of the mandibular condyle with endoscopically assisted fixation. Approximately 350 emergency cases are operated on in the department every year.
Special interests within the department are head and neck cancer surgery, salivary gland surgery (including the management of salivary gland calculi using sialoendoscopy), orthognathic surgery, the surgical management of skin cancers of the head and neck, TMJ surgery, and implant surgery.
