Department: Trades & Services
Location: London
Salary: £36,733 - £40,629
Flexible working: This is a full-time office-based role, but flexible working in the form of compressed hours will be available.
About Us:
MI5 and MI6 are part of the UK’s Intelligence Services. We work together to safeguard Britain’s people, interests and businesses from various threats at home, overseas, and online, including cyber-attacks, espionage, terrorism, and organised crime. Working across our vital missions, you’ll deliver impact at the heart of national security, all within a supportive and inclusive environment that allows everyone to thrive.
The Role:
As an in-house Graphic Designer, you’ll apply your creativity to craft bespoke designs for a wide range of requirements. From branding and logos to magazines, reports, infographics, and social media content, you'll follow accessibility guidelines and use Adobe CC, along with specialised tools to conceptualise and produce print/digital-ready work. You'll also bring your ideas to life, by designing business stationery, posters, advertisements, and merchandise designs, making sure everything is clear and accessible for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Along with your design background, you’ll have a good understanding of print/production equipment. This will help you as you support the work of the Print team and ensure effective quality control by considering output, production, and logistics in your work.
This role offers an interesting mix of independent tasks and teamwork, so strong communication and collaboration skills are important. Whether you’re collaborating with fellow designers or meeting stakeholders to discuss project requirements, you’ll manage time, expectations, costs, and deadlines. Your experience is highly valued, and as part of your role, you will be presenting your work to stakeholders for feedback and approval.
As someone who’s eager to develop, you’ll look for better ways of working, staying updated on design trends and new technologies, and identifying improvements in communicating with clients. As part of your training, there may be the requirement for some limited overseas travel.
About You:
As an experienced professional, you’ll have at least 3 years’ industry experience. Having worked in studios, both in teams and independently, you’ll be skilled in building relationships and finding creative solutions to challenges. While a formal qualification isn't essential for this role, an HND in Graphic Design or equivalent would support your application.
Along with your industry experience, you’ll be proficient in Adobe CC (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), motion graphics, accessible design, typography, and output for print and digital.
This role requires creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management skills. Being a strong communicator and an attentive listener, you’ll be able to collaborate effectively across the organisation, and your passion for acquiring new skills means you’re always keen to develop further.
Please note that a portfolio of your work/samples is required for the interview.
Training and Development:
You’ll be provided with a mentor to help you settle into your new role. Along with this, you’ll be acquainted with other teams and departments in the wider office. Initially, your training will be carried out in-house, so you can fully understand procedures as well as software training in Adobe CC or other bespoke programmes.
As you advance in your learning, external training opportunities will be available, including courses to enhance your creative thinking or develop new skills. For those looking to expand their qualifications, there's the option to pursue professional certifications in Graphic Design.
At MI5 and MI6, our staff are encouraged to develop in their respective field. This may involve internal, external and online training, and there will also be opportunities to shadow other teams, to gain knowledge in different areas of the business which may be beneficial in your role.
Rewards and Benefits:
You’ll receive a starting salary of £36,733 - £40,629 plus other benefits including:
1. 25 Days Annual Leave automatically rising to 30 days after 5 years' service, and an additional 10.5 days public and privilege holidays
2. Opportunities to be recognised through our employee performance scheme
3. Interest-free season ticket loan
4. Excellent pension scheme
5. Cycle to work scheme
6. Facilities such as a gym, restaurant and on-site coffee bars.
7. Paid parental and adoption leave.
Equal Opportunities:
At MI5 and MI6, diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking, and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities, and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
